As someone generally exhausted and frankly disheartened by many of the non-athletic exploits of college sports, I'm grateful to have something local toward which we can refocus our attention.
So, REMINDER: The La Salle University Explorers will be hosting the #22/22 Temple University Owls from inside the Tom Gola Arena on Olney Ave. tonight at 7:00 p.m. (1210 AM / 990 AM).
This, unlike the teams' meeting on Jan. 18, is the Big 5 game.
As such, we thought it prudent to check in on the Big 5 standings and outline the scenarios for the 2012 Big 5 title.
Standings:
Temple 2-0
St. Joseph's 2-1
Villanova 2-2
La Salle 1-2
Penn 1-3
Remaining Schedule:
2/22/12: Temple vs. La Salle (Gola Arena)
2/25/12: Temple vs. Saint Joseph's (Hagan Arena)
A Temple win over La Salle on Wednesday would put the team in position to sweep the Big 5 and claim the title with over St. Joe's on Saturday. A Temple loss, conversely, would grant the Hawks an opportunity to play for their first Big 5 title since 2004.
There are no tiebreakers in the Big 5 standings, meaning the only options left are an outright ("OUTRIGHT!") win by Temple, an outright ("OUTRIGHT!") win by St. Joe's, or a shared title between the two at 3-1.
Tip-off between Temple and La Salle is, again, scheduled for 7 p.m. this evening. Philadelphia college basketball -- forget the rest (for now).
(We also acknowledge the exact opposite of the above headline is true for A-10/Boardwalk Hall/Conference seeding purposes -- we just sweat the small stuff)
