Turnovers, Road Woes Kill Flyers in Toronto

Share

With Monday night’s 5-2 loss at the hands of the Toronto
Maple Leafs, the Flyers fell to 1-6-0 on the road this year. That’s bad news
considering it was only the first of a season-long six in a row away from the Wells
Fargo Center.

Things started off smoothly enough, with Orange & Black
dominating the first minute or so of action. Wayne Simmonds rammed home a
Philadelphia goal just 38 seconds into the game, as the Flyers were
buzzing around the ice like a swarm of wasps.

The Leafs knotted the score before intermission, but the
bulk of the damage was done in the second period. Multiple mistakes in the
Flyers’ zone and in front of their net put Ilya Bryzgalov in a world of
trouble, and he just wasn’t able to bail his mates out this time around.
Toronto grew the score from 1-1 to 4-1 in a matter of roughly four minutes, the final of those tallies forcing Peter Laviolette to make the call for Brian Boucher.

Boucher was brought up from the Adirondack Phantoms on
Sunday, and might have started Tuesday in Winnipeg before Bryz got the early hook.
Now we’ll have to see. Boosh replaced Michael Leighton on the roster after he was
placed on injured reserve because of a finger injury that is preventing him
from gripping a stick.

The Flyers had an opportunity to get back into the game
later in the period after Tye McGinn drew a boarding major for the second
consecutive tilt. He ate the boards and left the game, but all the Bullies
could muster was six shots on five minutes of the man advantage.

McGinn would return (again), scoring his second-career NHL goal as the clock wound down.

A lengthy power play wasn’t the only help they had. Leafs starting netminder
James Reimer was injured early in the second period, and was unable to continue.
Backup Ben Scrivens didn’t miss a beat though, despite the Flyers landing sending
the puck his way plenty. Philly had a whopping 46 shots on goal total, 33 of those on Scrivens.

The action was heartbreaking, and hardly worth recapping in
any detail, so here’s a very fitting video of James van Riemsdyk going around
Luke Schenn to find twine for the eighth time this season. Don’t worry Luke, we
still appreciate you. That’s just the kind of night it was.

Notes

Sean Couturier was scratched from the lineup with the flu. The Inq's Sam Carchidi is reporting Cooter may not make the trip to Winnipeg tomorrow, and could be sent home instead.
