Breaking news out of Giants camp in Albany: The Giants have signed former Eagles Pro Bowl offensive lineman Shawn Andrews. Michael Eisen of Giants.com reports that Andrews put his name on a contract at 1:45 AM.

Pretty sure the worst case scenario for Eagles fans would be to see the Big Kid resurrect his lost career in north Jersey after the Eagles gave up on him following years of patience and compassion for his many issues. From physical ailments to depression, the Birds stuck with Andrews until they simply had to move on last season. He mostly disappeared from the public eye after that, removing his comical-to-sad Twitter feed from our daily reading and showing up only in headlines mentioning UFL possibilities. And now he's a Giant.

The New York club seems confident he's in sufficient shape after the long layoff an injury recovery, which is surprising to those of us who followed him last season.

"Our personnel staff has been monitoring Shawn's progress for awhile now," general manager Jerry Reese said. "He looks great and had a very good workout for us yesterday. He can play both guard and both tackle positions. We just have to take him slow for the rest of the preseason to get him into game shape. Shawn is very excited and grateful for this opportunity to play for the New York Giants."

If he has indeed found a way to manage his depression and recover from his back injuries, this is a scary addition to a divisional rival. But those are considerable "if's," and he now faces the scrutiny of the New York media. We'll reserve any actual concern over the signing until he's on the field of a regular season game, and even then, it'll take above-average play at the position to have us kicking dirt in rekindled frustration. Andrews' actual play never declined, only his ability to suit up for a game.

We sincerely hope the worst of Andrews' issues are behind him, but we are not eager to see him return to success on the football field given the team he's landed with. Perhaps if he'd signed with the Chiefs...
