Chris Coste's Next Book To Be Set In Houston

If he's writing one and it's about his career as professional baseball player.  Coste has been released by the Phillies to clear a roster spot for the return of Raul Ibanez, and the Astros have claimed the catcher.  Oh sweet, more Paul Bako! /eye roll

By now we're all familiar with Coste's improbable story, finally reaching the show in 2005 at the age of 33, becoming a fan favorite and World Series Champion in the process.  His numbers have steadily declined since first joining the league, and his playing time had taken a hit this season, but he's been a serviceable backup during his time in red pinstripes.  We wish him nothing but the best in his future with Houston.

We'll wait for the quotes from local beat writers on why Coste did not survive the cuts as he has several times in the past, but with the addition of Bako and Marson beating down the doors for his chance, it was probably only a matter of time.

THANK GOD

My favorite Philly..I'm bummed..He was the Jim Eisenreich of this team..

"He was the Jim Eisenreich of this team" except that he didn't hit .300 at all. Appreciate all the guy did, great story, but his time was up.

Yeah, his numbers have declined, but you just can't not like that guy. I'll definitely be wearing my Coste t-shirt to the game tomorrow. Yeah, that's right, I have a Coste t-shirt.

Any word on Chooch from leaving the game last night?

no crying in baseball

WFC

step # 1 in improving our dreadful bench

So what you are saying is he was the Jim Eisenreich of this team minus the Tourettes?

They need a capable right handed bat on the bench. Coste wasnt it.

I dont like Bako at all....every pitch he swung at last night in the 5th was a ball...he was lucky he "beat" the throw to 1st or that would of been a inning ending double play.

Next step, execute Bruntlett.

@Bernie215

Couldnt agree more. Bako hasnt done anything to make me warm up to him.

there was a lot to like about his story but i was surprised he made into the season. this was a long time coming

there was a lot to like about his story but i was surprised he made into the season. this was a long time coming

does this also mean they're making room on the roster for possibly signing pedro(or bringing up marson potentially)?

This move paves the way for Ibanez being activated. But I still can't see the Phillies going the rest of the way with Paul Bako as the primary backup catcher

We still need a right handed bat off the bench......

oh yes, thanks mplant

Perhaps when Marson is back from injury it will be his time on the team. I'd rather he was with the team anyway.

I like Coste, and I am extremely sad that he left. I but thank god that Houston picked him up, or I would cry even harder.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I loved Coste!!! Get rid of Bruntlett instead!

@mellie

if coste could play 2nd and ss i'm sure they would have.

ESPN's Enrique Rojas reports that Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. flew from Phila. to the Dominican to watch Pedro today

@tim i too own a chris coste shirt...as well as bruntlett, if hes next im in the market for a new role player's name to wear...o and bako is shit, coste was better just as long as he wasn't catching for lidge

I'll miss Coste. He was a cool guy, and a class act. Not to mention a half decent option for a backup catcher. I don't think Bako is much of an upgrade offensively, but he might be defensively.

That being said, I'd rather have Coste. But I wish him the best of luck, and hope he has some success in Houston.

How is Bako in any way better than Coste? I'm having trouble understanding that.

Bring us Lou Marson!!!

Bako = Coste +1 year older @ 2x the price, right? This move is puzzling.

Oh, and Steve Jeltz thinks Bruntlett is terrible. Two utility infielder that will be best remembered for their 'dos.

@Hopper
The difference between Bruntlett and Jeltz is that the Phillies never tried passing Bruntlett off as a starter. Coste probably got released instead of Bako because they are both awful hitters but Bako handles pitchers way better.

Good points on both, Paul. It always seemed that Coste was a bit of a liability when it came to handling the staff. That was my thinking when it came to why Ruiz got so many starts last year while struggling at the plate.

@ Paul

I thought Coste was known for handling pitchers well? If he doesn't how the hell did he last here this long?

I maintain, Ruben should be kicking himself for trading Jaramillo for Paulino, then Paulino for Trashner. We could desperately use either of those two guys right now.

I love Chris Coste just as much as anyone and Bako is a black hole at the bottom of the lineup. But that said he is very much an upgrade as far as handling the staff is concerned. This is how he's gotten a backup catcher gig in the major leagues every year for the past 9 years.

Coste finally made it to the show two years ago because he finally started hitting. Good defensive catchers like Bako don't have to hit to get a job. Remember earlier this year when Ruiz got hurt and our pitching was awful during the time he was out? No coincidence.

always thought Coste and Moyer worked well together...guess we will see how Bako handles him

I am just bummed that they kept Bako...who has done nothing offensively and got rid of Coste. At least get someone who is an MLB talent...not a guy who is another lefty and was cut by 2 other teams because he sucks.

Coste was a bum. He may have had a few.. a very few clutch hits in his time in this city, but never did anything heroic or out of the ordinary. He's never lifted the team with a killer series. Christ, the man has hit more balls onto the warning track, or into the leather of a double play turning shortstops glove, than anyone I can remember in Phillies past. Dude was a liability behind the plate, couldn't call a game worth a damn. Remember when he was crying about Pat Burrell running out onto the field to greet Brett Meyers after we clinched in 2007? He was a whiny good for nothing bum. As for his book.. Cry me a fucking river dude. Just cause you couldn't make the leap from minor league to the bigs IN TWELVE YEARS doesn't compel me to read your hum-bum pity me bullshit. I was jumping for joy upon learning that he had been picked up by another squad.. My only regret is that he didn't get traded to Japan cause now I have to see his stupid face on sportscenter whenever he lets an Oswalt ball slip past him for a run. To the people who liked him.. good for you.. I just wish you had your eyes open for the past 2 seasons.. Clearly if you had you'd think otherwise.. Good riddance ya bum..
