Rumor: PTB Is House Shopping in San Diego
Speaking with the WIP morning show, Randy Miller reported that he has heard that Pat Burrell and his wife have been looking at houses in the San Diego area. Now, the Padres are a dreadfully bad team, or at least they were last year, in a big park, and there are no rumors to the effect that PTB might be interested in signing with them. Also, Pat has a few homes around the warm weather areas of the country already, and a wealthy person shopping for a place in San Diego doesn't necessarily mean anything other than that he and the wife like PB or La Jolla.
But it wouldn't be too surprising to see him sign somewhere in SoCal, like Anaheim for instance. In any case, if he leaves, it's clear he'll be missed in this town, and few people have ever seen a finer farewell. With the winter meetings starting next week, we'll be interested to watch what the Phillies do in left field and the very necessary righty bat in the middle of the lineup.

If I had Pat the Pat's money, I'd buy a house in San Diego too...it's awesome out there. I wouldn't stake too much in this, although I've already given up on hoping he comes back to Philly.

I think Jermaine Dye would fit the bill perfectly. His contract is pretty much a bargain and he's a consistent run producer. Only problem is the Phils are one of the teams on his no-has trade list. Perhaps his mind has changed since he signed the deal?

question for all...just a "what-if"
would you rather have Lowe and a platoon LF situation OR Moyer and Burrell?

How about Eric Byrnes, the D'backs want to trade him, his contract isn't too bad and if he can bounce back from his injuries this yr should be able to produce in CBP. Do a bad contract swap, him for Eaton.

To SoCal housing market is a mess right now, so most likely he is just picking up a property at an extremely good price.

Dye has a full no-trade clause, and the Phillies are on his "no thanks" list. Towers is trying to cut payroll in San Diego so I would highly doubt that he's making a run at Burrell. He would be awful for cavernous Petco too.

Lowe and a platoon in left, easily. We started with a platoon in right last year and that worked out pretty well in the end, don't you agree?

@ d27
I heard the teams on the no-trade list are all Northeast teams - Mets, Yanks, Sox, Orioles, Phils, Pirates. However, players can and have traditionally waived no-trade clauses.
Dye would be absolutely perfect for this lineup. He put up 32 and 96, but the biggest thing is he batted .292. This is a 42 point boost over what Burrell had to offer. Dye improves this lineup at a cheaper cost than Burrell. He is due $11.5 next year and has a mutual option for $12 mill in 2010.
I'd certainly welcome the acquisition.

@ Mike
I'm pretty sure it is a limited no trade clause for Dye. Furthermore, I am inclined to believe that Dye will probably waive it this offseason.

Dye included East Coast teams in his no-trade clause so he has a say in where he goes. It's a lot more powerful than you'd think a six-team no-trade clause would be, because small teams won't trade for him due to his salary, and most higher-payroll teams (the ones that could afford him) are on the East Coast and, subsequently, are on that list.

He probably just wants to watch the free screening of the Ryan Leif movie which premieres tonight!!!

Imagine the taunts that Dye would get if he came to Philly and stunk.

I can't imagine why Pat would want to live in PB...

@Scott: Yes, but where would you rather play? Philly or San Diego? The Padres were the 2nd worst team in the NL last year...

Spoken like a guy who has never been to San Diego. Take a trip out there some time. You'll know what I'm talking about.

I live in San Diego. If I were a ballplayer I'd play on shitty Padres teams for my entire career to play all my home games in 75 degree weather with a cool breeze in a nice park. I can't imagine a better baseball playing situation. The garlic fries at Petco are also excellent.
I can imagine Pat is probably tired of an obsessed sports culture critiquing his every move, his batting ups and downs, and his propensity for late night adventures in the city. We're very hard on our athletes and there's no one we've been harder on than PTB. He just won the World Series, he's probably looking to relax in a low key city with a low key sports culture, with beautiful weather and women.
Also, fuck Patrick Elias and Brian Gionta - I thought we had this thing wrapped up. Shit.
