Jamie Moyer Will Be Back with Phillies

Just heard it reported by 610 WIP's Anthony Gargano that Jamie Moyer will return to the Phillies in 2009. A press conference is expected later this afternoon. We'll update this post as information regarding the terms of the deal become available.

Moyer looked a bit shaky in the playoffs but came through with a solid performance in the World Series. His presence at the end of the rotation still makes me feel a little bit better about the starting five.

From the Phillies press release:

Left-hander Jamie Moyer signed a two-year contract, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro, Jr. announced today.

Moyer, 46, went 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 starts for the Phillies this past season, leading the team in wins.  He allowed three runs or fewer in 14 straight starts, from June 6 through August 21, becoming the first Phillie to do so since 1967.

David Murphy is also reporting it on philly.com http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/news_update/Moyer_agrees_to_2-year_deal.html

Saw Amaro, Jr. on CSN for the Utley press conference and he said they had resigned Moyer at the end--the Moyer presser is slated for 4:15pm on CSN. Manuel will also speak I believe.

So I guess no Lowe then.

especially any minor leaguers we bring up through out the season can learn a thing or two from mr. moyer.. jamie is very valuable. not to mention having the most wins on the team along with now being part of the most legendary philadelphia sports team.

I find it pretty tough to quibble with that rotation given what the top 4 brought us a couple months ago. Let's just pray Happ or Carrasco wins the 5th job because with Kendrick and Park as competition, it would just be depressing if neither of them can pull that feat off. Am I alone in thinking this could be the end of the Phils' offseason moves?

@ Andy

What the hell bro? Are you saying I don't have a chance of making the 5th spot?

Haha.

I'd love to see Carrasco get a shot so spring training will be interesting to watch. Hard to argue about the current projected rotation. Let us just hope that Myers has his act together and the injuries stay at a minimum.

What's the latest on Adam Eaton?

@Andy Don't they still need a stopgap for Utley at second?

Sarcastic Eaton Comment: Eaton will be wearing the Phanatic costume this season around the Park.

Real Adam Eaton Comment: I heard that the Phillies offered Eaton to other teams in return for paying only $1 million of his salary this year, leaving us with 7 or 7.5 mil.

@ Andy:

I'm still convinced they'll sign a utility infielder as an Utley-stopgap/injury insurance. Outside of that, however, I agree with you. I think they remove themselves from the bidding war slowly heating up around Lowe with some vaguely-worded "We like our lineup" press release after the Moyer presser.

That might be it. When I saw Moyer no longer on the active 25, I thought "Oh shit, that's it."

1967 is not a typo. It was Chris Short and he rattled off 26 in a row.

Kevin M: Latest I had heard on Adam Bomb was that the Phils wanted to move him at just about any cost, including eating $8 mill of his salary to do so. They just want him far, far away.

2/$15M

Not bad. I love Jaime, but I am still a little hesitant. I was before 2008 as well. I hope he proves me wrong, but I was hoping to go young with the 2 spots in the rotation.

I still think they need another legit starter that can go btw. Cole and Brett. Just bc Brett had an awesome post season does not mean that I have forgotten his mid-season woes. I trust that he has figured them out but you never know. Moyer is my boy but what happens if his age catches up with him? I think he'll me fine bc he is a freaken magician on the mound but again, you never know. Blanton will be Blanton and I really think Kendrick is gonna be legit. At one point last year when the Phils hit a rough patch he was their best pitcher. This is a solid rotation but as a Philadelphian, I have learned never to get comfortable. I just want some potential fall back options because I am a skeptical bastard and . . . you never know! ;)

"He allowed three runs or fewer in 14 straight starts, from June 6 through August 21, becoming the first Phillie to do so since 1967." Coincidentally, Moyer was also the last pitcher to do so, in 1967.

Good. It's about time.

Mitch, that's why we signed Chan Ho park.

I honestly thought that the Ibanez move would free up money for a bigger splash than Moyer. That should just about wrap up our off season... now it's time for a few bargain barrel stocking stuffers.

Can Tad stopgap for Chase? He's signed right? I can't make it out from this site.

Little help, please.

And Chan Ho Park. Ick. I don't want any ex-Mutts.

I was hoping we'd pick up Lowe for the 3 spot but if that's not gonna happen Moyer is probably as good as any other option. I have zero problem with Happ as the 5 starter or even 4 if someone gets hurt, and Kendrick and Park should be pretty solid long relief/spot starter options. If Carrasco can force his way into the rotation, all the better.

moyer should have a lifetime contract providing he starts every game against the marlins

Chan Ho Park? Really? That is the best that we can come up with. I was hoping for someone that would put this rotation over the edge and I really don't feel like Chan Ho is gonna do that. Maybe I'm wrong. I sure hope so.

I think it is so gay that the Yankees just go buy everything. I hope their new stadium is shit and they have a terrible year because that is what they deserve. Hopefully the old adage that "cheaters never prosper" remains true and the Steinbrenners loose their money and the Yankees fall into unrepairable disarray for the next . . . hmmm . . . 10, no make that 50 seasons.
The Phils have done it the right way. Developed from the inside with a balance of free agents.

I am pumped up. This was the perfect move. Now we just need a right-handed bat with some pop off the bench, and we're good to go. I'd prefer an outfielder, just because Cholly has NO flexibility in the OF with right-handed bats. But I imagine it will probably be a utility IF.

And, for the record, when I say "perfect move," I mean to indicate that I preferred Jamie to Lowe. Lowe is younger, but would be way out of gas by the time a 4-year contract is over. Due to superb conditioning and the totally different style of pitching, I think Jamie will still be pitching pretty well by the end of his deal.

@ Mark
He was tendered to the minor leagues and he refused making him a free agent.

also saw a Paul Hagan article on 12/9 where they weren't interested in brining him back

The Phillies want someone in asia to actually know who they are. Seriously I wore my world championship Tshirt in Japan and nobody knew who the Phillies were. Since we cant get Japan we'll just get their inferiority complex having neighbor, really quite fitting for Philly.
