Andre Miller's typically solid play has been spotty as of late and Derrick Rose decided to accentuate that point on Sunday. The Sixers struggles continued as they were downed by the Bulls. Witness the swat and juke:
The Birds are off, having picked through the Cardinals on Thursday, and I'm a little sluggish from my 10-year high school reunion last night, so we're gonna open the floor to you for a few hours. What are you happy about this weekend? What's bugging you? Thoughts on the NFL games today? Fantasy football names related to Plax's shooting himself? Any good links? YouTubes? I'll get the ball rolling with this one...
You may remember that many of the memories Enrico and I listed when looking back on the Spectrum involved seeing Phish play there. Just after the Flyers and Sixers moved across the parking lot, we started going to Phish shows, both seeing our first of many during a legendary 1996 holiday run.
One added bonus of being a Phish fan in Philly was that the band had a strong connection to the Flyers. Trey grew up in South Jersey and worshiped the team as a kid. John LeClair was a native of Vermont, the where the band met and later called home. Seeing Trey rock a Flyers jersey on stage added some more fun to an already great experience, as did seeing the band sing an a capella Star Spangled Banner before the Flyers dropped the puck.
As part of their Spectrum pre-eulogy, the Flyers asked Trey to recount his favorite memory in the building. No, it wasn't the 12/28/96 show (my favorite memory there), it was a landmark goal by Reggie Leach that earned Trey a manna-from-the-sky burger. Video after the jump.
The streak had to end sometime. I was hoping it might get to the 8 or 10 win mark, but we'll have to settle for 6. Not bad considering what the Flyers looked like before shredding through every opponent for 2 weeks.
It was a weird and chippy game, one that saw both Jeff Carter and Marty Biron get nicked up, another Carter goal, a pair of good fights, and Sergei Samsonov alive and well. Joffrey Lupul opened the scoring for the Flyers, and Carter took over the NHL goal scoring lead with his 16th, but aside from a beautiful tally by Mike Richards that was negated by a too-many-men call, the Flyers couldn't put away the Hurricanes in regulation. The game went to OT, where Samsonov corralled a puck off of the boards past Matt Carle and deked out Biron for the 3-2 winner.
The Sixers will try to bounce back from a tough loss on Wednesday to the Magic at the Wachovia Center. The Sixers were down early against a good Orlando team but fought back and had a lead in the final minutes but couldn't hold on. Elton Brand was hitting some big shots down the stretch but Iguodala and Miller couldn't get the ball in the basket when it mattered most. Andre Miller made an awful decision to heave a half court type shot as a last desperation attempt but he did so with almost three seconds left on the clock. Even in the postgame, Mo Cheeks seemed unhappy with Miller for that shot selection.
And that brings us to tonight and the defending champion Boston Celtics.
The Eagles actually didn't make us all lose our Thanksgiving feasts yesterday and performed quite well against the Arizona Cardinals. While some of you may have been working on some apple pie during the game, Mark used some leftovers to make a delicious looking bruschetta type snack.
Black Friday shopping? Are you serious? I don't even think my mom and sister do that anymore.
If you're one of the many Americans fortunate to have today off, cramming into a crowded mall, waiting in lines, and walking cold miles through parking lots is not exactly a vacation day in my book. No, I'd rather drink coffee, eat donuts, and watch movies to shake off the heavy winter beers we put away last night with some delicious turkey and corn, mashed potatoes, and gravy volcanoes.
Then, at 1PM, we have the real treat in Black Friday uselessness—the home end of the back-to-back between the Flyers and the Hurricanes. If anyone needs me, I'll be planted firmly on the couch.
The700Level.com's resident running expert Kristin, who has previously written about the ING Distant Run and also ran in the '07 Philly Marathon, spent last Sunday running through scenic Philadelphia for the 2008 version of the Philly Marathon. With apologies for my tardiness, these are her thoughts after last Sunday.
One upside of running a marathon
in sub-freezing temperatures is that the cold tends to take your mind
off of the serious cardiorespitory and neuromuscular exertion – not to
mention cramping, chafing and general misery - of putting one foot in
front of the other for 26.2 miles. Yet the Philadelphia Marathon marked its 15th
Anniversary with a sold-out crowd on Sunday, as more than 18,000
runners competed on a flat, scenic, Boston qualifying-friendly course.
Ahhhh, Thanksgiving. One of the few days of the year when you can eat absolutely anything you want and not feel guilty about it. And then eat some more.
We're lucky this year to have some Eagles football to enjoy as we sit on the couch and follow up our turkey feasts with a few cold ones. The Cardinals are a pretty hot team and come into Philly with perhaps the best receiving corp in football and a quarterback in Kurt Warner who is playing at MVP levels. This will be a tight football game.
(at least until he throws his first pick, then it's open season)
As the Donovan McNabb era ostensibly comes to a close, it would be nice to let him go out with some class. From my post just now over at FanHouse:
There's been a lot of speculation in Philly about the kind of
reaction McNabb will receive on this chilly Thanksgiving evening following his mid-game benching last week. In my
opinion, the McNabb era is coming to a close in Philadelphia, we all
realize this, but instead of booing the man who has given us a decade
of wonderful football memories in Philadelphia, I believe the faithful
at Lincoln Financial Field should cheer and support the man and give
thanks for a career in which he brought us "to the appetizer but didn't get [us] to the entree."
At least there were a few tasty appetizers in the past few seasons. Eagles fans are going to have to wait at least a few more years for a real meal.
Iverson skipped the Detroit Pistons' practice on Thursday morning,
less than 24 hours after grumbling of coach Michael Curry's decision to
hold the workout.
Curry said that Iverson will face a "hefty
fine" and will be held out of the starting lineup for Friday's game
against the Milwaukee Bucks.
Yeah, don't bet on the Pistons to come out of the East.
We've all speculated about the reality that Donovan McNabb could be playing for another team in 2009. You know it's for real when Vegas starts making lines about it.
Which
team's roster will Donovan McNabb be on for week 1 of the 2009 NFL season?
Philadelphia
Eagles 7/4
See what other teams are favorites after the jump.
The Flyers got off to a great start last night, controlling the first period action and allowing just one shot on goal by the Hurricanes. However, despite some great chances, they were only able to hold a 1-0 lead as the period came to an end. Carolina tied it early in the second, and the Hurricanes had the tempo, until this play broke the knot in the third.
Gotta love the scheduling wizards in the NHL offices...
The same guys that gave the Rangers a headstart on the season, one that has them still sitting at four more games-played than the rest of the division, also arranged the Flyers and Hurricanes playing each other four times in the next eight games. The Flyers are in Raleigh tonight, off tomorrow, and hosting the Canes again on Black Friday. Then, the two teams play another pair of games in the first two weeks of December, and that's the last we'll see of them all season.
