Who's House? Cole's House!
The Phils just won their first playoff game since 1993. There wasn't much offense in this one, but fortunately, Cole didn't need it. The Phils' ace threw 8 innings of shutout ball, striking out 9 and going untouched into the 5th.
Brad Lidge once again made it a little interesting in the 9th inning, allowing a run and few baserunners advance to scoring position, but he closed it out with some big K's nonetheless.
In a game where hits were hard to come by, Chase Utley knocked a flair over Mike Cameron's head in a huge 3-run third. Although the bats didn't provide much more pop, some good ABs still ran up Yovani Gallardo's pitch count, chasing him from the game early. It's always a good thing when you can get to a team's bullpen in the first game of a series, but it's that much better in the playoffs. However, the Brewers don't usually need the 'pen much in CC starts.
Well I'm gonna go have a heart attack and a beer. Even when Lidge was taking us on the roller coaster, I couldn't help thinking that we're still just damn lucky to have someone so lights out to finish our games.
1-0 series lead. Wow.

i'll take you up on that heart attack

as I said in the division-clincher, it just wouldn't be a Phillies win if it were easy. ten more to go!

I almost shit myself when I saw Hamels was pulled. I have a feeling he may have cruised through the 9th a bit easier than Lidge, and if he did happen to give up 2 baserunners, then you bring in the closer.
Nonetheless, they pick up a big win today especially seeing as they face CC tomorrow which is not the most exciting thing in the world. Let's hope all these starts on short rest catch up to him.

First win since Game 5 of the 1993 World Series. Awesome.
Oh, and who threw out the first pitch today? Mitch Williams. Again with the marketing. What the fuck are you all thinking out there in Phillies land?
Sorry to have given you all the scare, fellas. As for me getting shot, I can't think of a bigger waste of bullets!

I'll take the win, but the Phils' need a much better offensive showing tomorrow. You can't rely on errors to produce runs.

@Mike H
You are a moron.

I'm beginning to think "Lights Out" is what's gonna happen to me when Brad pitches.

Phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That's all I've got to say about that game.
There's a whole bunch of Muts fans here in Syracuse, and I walked right into my boss's (he's a Muts fan) office yesterday with all my Phillies stuff on and rubbed it in his face.
Best insult ever to a NY fan: The playoff store called, and they're all out of you!!!!

Thanks, Lidge, that's a week of my life I will never get back.
/reminds self they won

I blame Werth for the black hole he created in the #2 hole today for the lack of offense. Might have to flip Vic back up there. Something's not right with him.

@Wilkes-Barre Sucks:
Couldn't we maybe have one or two easy ones?
Seriously, I'd feel better about Lidge if he goes a couple of 1-2-3 innings now. He's been fantastic, but he's been making it just a little too exciting for me the last few weeks.
Posted by: Kevin | Wednesday, October 01, 2008 at 06:22 PM
Yeah, lets put one of the most beloved former Phillies out there and show our support for the Philadelphia police at the same time (the cop who survived the shooting that took the life of Officer McDonald, his partner, threw out the pitch with him)
Yeah what morons they are Mike H. Jesus!

just like my old wrestling coach used to tell me..."in the post season, a win is a win is a win."

cant wait til cole throws 7 innings allowing 3 runs and you people can all ask when hes going to pitch well in a "big" game.
i hope all you cole-doubters have finally been proven wrong.

...said the guy who jinxed the perfect game [im looking at you, chris!]
ok, after a walk around the ASU campus in 100 degree weather and seeing that the tits are still on full display, I'm reminded that we're 10 wins away from glory. I have calmed down a little bit for now.

now you've gone and done it. you've made me have to bust out my dad's old "isms".

-Suffering builds character.

Anybody watching the TBS broadcast see the graphic for Carlos Ruiz in the 3rd inning before his base hit?
C CARLOS RUIZ
Avg .231 HR 4 RBI 31
Nickname: "Cooch"
hahahaha
Posted by: Blues | Wednesday, October 01, 2008 at 07:15 PM
@ Blues:
I read that at least 5 times, trying to figure out whether they actually though "chooch" was spelled like that or they just had a typo.
Twas good humor.

Saw that too.....another example of crack reporting by TBS. Morons.

We had standing room only seats, got there early, and stood behind home plate towards the 1st base side. It also happened to be the section where a lot of players wives had seats...
I mentioned to one guy that a particular fine looking woman had to be Dobbs wife, since no other woman, so nicely dressed, would come alone to a game with her child, who happened to wear a custom made dobbs outfit. The guy than asked her as she walked up, and she admitted it. No confirmation on who else was sitting there, but there had to at least be half a dozen. You could pick them out. Beautiful, dressed expensively, without a man, and sometimes with a child.

@Wilkes-Barre Sucks:
I never said it wasn't worth having, believe me I'll take 10 more just like this if that's what will get a parade down Broad Street.
Posted by: Kevin | Wednesday, October 01, 2008 at 08:47 PM
but i'd take a chevy to the face for a parade down broad st.
i hope CC shits on the mound tomorrow. approach him the opposite of a rookie. try not to go down 2 strikes to the nastiest pitcher around.

We are also opening the Charlie Manual Center for kids who can't read good, and want to learn to do other things good too.

Lidge definitely gave everyone a scare, but it's amazing to have a guy who can still grab a save when his best stuff isn't working.
He didn't seem to have his normal control on the slider, and no one was chasing it anyway, so what does he do? He takes his second best stuff and blows some fastballs by the Cheeseburger and then strikes out Hart to end it.
He's had stretches in the season where his slider just wasn't locating where he wanted to and he pushed through it, I'm not too worried
