Quotable: An Unnamed Phils Pitcher Says What You Might Be Thinking
There are no shortage of opinions on Bud Selig's decision (A) to keep play going in a wild rain when the Phillies were winning and (B) to suspend play as soon as the Rays tied it, aided by slick conditions that allowed the tying run to get on base. If you're mad this morning, you're not alone. Reports are that the Phillies players and manager Charlie Manuel were pretty fired up behind closed doors last night.
WIP's morning show reported that Manuel did not address the press or field questions after the game, and Angelo & Co. pointed us to some choice off-the-record quotes obtained by Mike Radano of the Courier-Post.
“That (expletive deleted) guy,” one pitcher said as he saw commissioner Bud Selig before walking out the back door of the clubhouse. “I wouldn’t let him supervise one of my (bowel movements). He has no clue. Not one (expletive deleted) clue.”
Now who could have said that?
Actually, after the emotional jerk-around we all got last night, it could have been anyone. Radano also shared that an unnamed position player weighed in on the decision to suspend play for the first time in World Series history:
“(Expletive deleted),” one position player said in the direction of one television pausing only for a moment before leaving. “He’s a moron. How stupid can one person be?”
Are we able to pre-order Radano's as-yet unwritten paperback on the 2008 Phillies playoffs run?

They really need to not let this affect them. This team has kept their cool the entire season. I know their pissed but they need to just take it back out to the field.

I agree, it was some bullshit that they made them play in that crap, but they have to channel that energy and get some hits. Twelve at bats and nine outs from a Championship, can't go losing your composure now.
On another note, if something should go wrong tonight I just got an email from the Rays saying tickets were still available for game 6. How lame that they couldn't sell that out when the went on sale on Monday. The go on sale at 9:00 am here's the link:

Go Phils!

How lame huh? Maybe no one wants to buy tickets when the all we here about in the media is how poor Philly has not won a championship in 25 years. The Umpires want you to win and MLB wants you to win.

why not have separate rules for the playoffs? suspend the game but make them finish it. that last night was ridiculous. you don't want to win on a rain out, but that was bullshit. myers' words never rung truer.

Cadillac Bud is as much of a disgrace to the game of baseball as the designated hitter.

This is a good articel on espn.com by Jayson Stark:

What a debacle!

My guess, pitcher is Brett Myers and position player is Pat Burrell
Posted by: Brock | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 08:44 AM
my guess is it was brett myers
Posted by: Mark | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 08:45 AM
@ Mark D's Nuts
Maybe fans in Tampa should be real fans. I mean, their team gets a national homer broadcast from Buck and McCarver, so they have people rooting for them at least.
Also, please eat a bag of dicks, kthx
Also, if MLB really wanted the Phils to win, they would have called the game before the beginning of the 6th
ALSO, please eat two bags of dicks, kthx
Posted by: TH | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 08:47 AM
@ Millertime: Agreed 100%. The idea that there was even a possibility that the World Series could have been decided on an aborted 5-inning game is ridiculous.
Posted by: Steve U | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 08:49 AM
The bottom line is the Phillies were forced to play defense in that horrible weather, but were not given the chance to go on offense in that same weather, which is totally unfair since the stoppage was totally arbitrary and could have happened at any point.

Did the Rays really check out of their hotel, and now it's booked?

Jayson Stark has written what many of us feel...

Ugh... just go to his story on ESPN dot com...

Integrity of the game? Really Bud? You made our boys play in the worst field conditions I have ever seen and it has directly affected the score and possibly the series.
The only people in the stadium that were looking out for the integrity of the game were our fans, who were good enough to sit through that mess, our Uncle Charlie, and all of our Cousins in red & white. I only wish I was a fly on the wall in that clubhouse to hear the reaction after the top of the 6th.
To all the fans out there: we now have an obligation to be the voice of our team that was silenced. If you are able to be at the last 3.5 innings of this game let your team know that you are behind them like never before - because we are all pissed off together.
Let's bring this home in Philly!

Is there any doubt that Brett Myers said the first quote?
Posted by: Bob | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 09:31 AM
Eh Maybe Condry he's an ornery SOB, but its likely Myers
Posted by: brett | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 09:35 AM
@ Nate: Exactly. For all of us out-of-staters and fans who otherwise can't attend the game, those who are in attendance need to blow the proverbial roof off the Bank when game 5 resumes!
As for the quotes, I'm guessing they were the knee-jerk reactions much like many of our expletive-laced tirades after the decision was made.
I have no doubt that this team will regain its composure and go out there and once again beat the Rays.
Posted by: ARphillyfan | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 09:56 AM
brett myers the first quote.
maybe Burrell, Werth? for the second quote.
Either way both players are right.
Phils come out with the chip on their shoulder, and do work. Go Phils!
Posted by: BFisch | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 10:24 AM
We have it on good authority that the first quote was not Brett Myers...
Posted by: Matt P | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 10:36 AM
I say Condrey then
Posted by: Brett | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 10:39 AM
I'm guessing it was Hamels.
Posted by: TH | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 10:49 AM
i saw we let myers strap on the wifebeater and go 1 round with selig.

im pitching tonight. fuck shit up
Posted by: will | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 11:00 AM
Yeah, I'll never get these rules. Is it true that a game can't be suspended unless it's tied? If so, that's dumb - the idea of suspending the game is just so you can get the entire game in at some point, rather than calling it before its completion. If it's not true, then they should have suspended it earlier, much earlier.
So, just out of curiosity... does this mean that whoever had tickets to last night's game can get into tonight's? What about all those people who don't show up, owing to the bad weather? If all the tickets have been sold, then they can't let more people in, can they? So for three innings, there'll be mostly empty stands..
I hope they let the ticketholders know soon when the damn game will resume.

Good article by Stark on that debacle. I think it says something that the Rays wanted the game to be called after Rollins misplayed the pop up, even though it was helping them.
Its also ridiculous to play when a pitcher can only throw one pitch, a fastball. I don't care the conditions major league hitters know how to hit fastballs whatever the conditions are, and throwing it time after time they'll start getting hits. Selig royally fucked the Phillies last night. And if he had called it after say 4, like the players suggested that means Hamels would've barely thrown any pitches and probably would've been fine coming back on short rest.
and @ Dan, in the stark article he says that baseball does have the convenient rule about suspending when tied, but that Selig was going to just put the game in a long ass rain delay (aka suspend it with a different use of words), so why the hell didn't he do it earlier?
Posted by: Liam | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 11:52 AM
@Liam - your point about Hammels being limited to one pitch is spot on.
McCarver said something like "wet bat, dry ball, advantage pitcher" I think he is absolutely wrong (shocker)... that was a hose job of the Phils in the hopes that TB could tie it up. Kudos to the Rays for doing it, but they DID have a decided advantage thanks to the miserable conditions. Even if Upton hadn't gotten such a good jump, he had good odds of stealing safely because a throw down with a 10lb ball is a tall order... ugh
I don't subscribe to doom and gloom. I think that it is all going to turn out fine for the Phils and they they will bring it home on Wednesday (in Philly - don't see a game tonight). But that shouldn't let Selig and MLB/FOX off the hook.

Obviously you're not going to end the World Series on a game that goes any less than 9 (or 8.5) innings. That's fine. What I have a problem with is that the Phillies got one less at-bat in the slop than the Rays did.
That said, I think we're in better shape than we would have been had the game gotten suspended after 3 or 4. We really only got fucked out of one inning of Hamels, and if you're looking at picking this up in the 3rd or 4th you have to give serious consideration to going with Myers.
Hopefully it'll get delayed long enough that Hamels will be able to go again if necessary. What pisses me off is that I'm supposed to go up to Boston this weekend for the BC-Clemson game...no way am I gonna miss watching a potential clinching game in Philly but now it's looking like I'm going to have to miss the football game, miss the potential parade, have to drive through the middle of the night on Friday and miss hitting the slut-packed bars on Halloween, or some combination thereof.
Posted by: Alex F. | Tuesday, October 28, 2008 at 02:55 PM
Hey Alex, I was going up for the Clemson-BC game, too. But I also have tickets to the clincher, so I'm just gonna eat the ticket. The BC one, that is. I'll be there for ND anyway. FUCK SELIG. This is getting as bad as Bettman in the NHL.
