Quotable: Brian Dawkins Makes No Excuses
Most Eagles fans had some concerns about about the performance of the defense against Dallas, chief among them were weak showings from Sean Considine and Brian Dawkins. But Weapon-X doesn't make excuses. He knows how it is.
Dawkins said he doesn't expect to be cut slack because he has a resume that includes six Pro Bowls, countless big plays and a lot of big victories."No, man, this is Philadelphia," he said. "Do you know where we are? This is Philadelphia. There aren't too many people who are going to be cut slack and I understand that. I'm not going to make a big deal of it because I know those same fans that are questioning what I'm doing will be the same fans who will be hip, hip, hooraying when I grab a pick and take it to the house."
There's not a whole lot more we hate to see than Brian Dawkins falling off a step and perhaps starting the decline on his brilliant career.
To look on the bright side, it was only one game and Terrell Owens is a tough guy to cover. I'm not ready to call BDawk "done" just yet.

B Dawk = J Roll?

This is what happens when you let Jimmy Rollins write your quotes for you.

Ron: Damn, I was too slow! Looks like B-Dawk isn't the only one around here who might have lost a step.

I don't get the J-Roll comparison. He didn't say anything negative or untrue.
I don't understand the criticism either. Most of the game he looked fine, but he got beat one-one-one a few times by T.O. and Witten. Well that's the risk you run trying to defend those guys. They are great players, and they are going to make plays against man to man coverage.

B Dawk may be slowly losing a step but he is a leader on the field. and me love him

He's not anything like JRoll. He knows its a tough town, you produce you get cheered, you don't we'll be on you to know whats goes on. He's just stating the stiuation, not anything good or bad about it. Im sure he knows he didn't play his best game, but and older BDawk is still top 10 in S in the league

The Jungle, baby?

Dawkins said what I think Rollins wanted to say, but Dawkins said it far, far better and didn't insult anyone.
And I think even Dawkins knows it's unacceptable for receivers to get behind the safety the way Witten did whether Witten is an All-Pro or not.

Dawkins couldn't cover Witten, not TO. TO scored on a slant and 9 times out of 10, TO would score on that slant on any corner.
TO's big TD was over contract boy and consisuck.
Posted by: Justin Evans | Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 05:37 PM
@Justin Evans no, it was over consisuck. "contract boy," from every angle I've seen on that play, was responsible for either the sideline, given his position, or coverage underneath TO down the field, given his action on the play. He recognized TO coming at him and let him go by, then followed downfield, expecting Consisuck to maintain his over the top assignment. If he does, TO's blanketed as he clears Asante and Romo either throws elsewhere or throws into coverage. Consisuck bit the double move, blew the coverage all by himself, and left both he and "contract boy" to look like fools chasing TO.

Oh and dawk didn't say anything negative. He just said he doesn't expect fans to cut him slack when he's having a hard time, and he doesn't mind because he knows they'll be there cheering when he picks it up...how is that not just a spot on understanding of a passionate, demanding fanbse?

"Do you know where we are? This is Philadelphia."
I need that on a shirt - stat.

i love brian dawkins
this is nothing like what j roll said.
doesn't anyone remember last year when dawk did that interview with comcast and he started crying when asked what the city of philadelphia meant to him.

This is the polar opposite of what JRoll said. You can give up a few plays on busted coverage but you can't replace a guy like Dawkins that bleeds green in your huddle.

Andy is right ... that looked like a Cover 2 defense when Considine tripped over his own feet on the double move.
What's really mind-boggling is why you have Considine playing the deep cover 2 on T.O.'s side in the first place.
Posted by: Joe Manning | Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at 11:21 PM
It wasn't a cover 2, it was a quarters defense. Four defensive backs, usually the two corners and two safeties, play a deep zone. In this case, that side of the field was manned by Lito and Considine. Lito's responsibility was the outside and underneath, Considine the inside and over the top.
Owens ran up the field and cut as if the play were in an in pattern. As usual, it was an excellent route; he sold the move to the inside beautifully, turning his body completely. The moment Considine broke from his zone, Owens bolted up the field in that direction and the play was over.
Considine ignored his responsibility when he moved on the pass to the middle. Maybe he saw a hole in the zone which would have led to a first down, but even if that was the case, it would have been a much better result than six points. His job on that play was to prevent a 72 yard passing TD, and he failed miserably.

To clarify, that does sound like a cover 2 in theory, but the corners' responsibility in quarters is much deeper. The defense called is actually designed to stop exactly that play.

Brian Dawkins is my all time favorite Eagle. Honestly no one is even close.
That being said, B Dawk is saying exactly what J Roll said minus the word "frontrunner". Let's be honest, neither one of them is wrong... Jimmy just chose his word poorly.
