Krukker Had Some Wild-Ass Back-in-the-Day Friends

The great stories from the 1993 Phillies team may never end. Via the Charlotte Gazette and Awful Announcing, we have the latest installment, featuring John Kruk's friend/roommate, who reportedly robbed banks and grocery stores (while wearing a pretty fantastic hat), subsequently resulting in the FBI showing up to talk to the Krukker when he was about to take BP for the Padres.

"I kept hearing more from spring training. When I got back for the season, I don't know what excuse I made to him, but I said I needed to find my own place," Kruk said. "Then, of course, the FBI comes in right before batting practice and it's 'Holy crap.'"

The FBI questioned Kruk and showed him a picture of Plummer robbing a bank wearing a hat that read, "American by Birth. West Virginian by the Grace of God."

The FBI told Kruk that Plummer believed he was the one that turned him in.

"What I'm hearing from the FBI and other people is that he's a drug-possessed, gun-toting psychopath now. Everyone is telling me, 'He's coming after you,'" Kruk said. "Every knock on the door could be a teammate or it could be him. It scared the shit out of you."

You're on deck, Pete Incaviglia.

I'm thinking Jim Eisenreich's stories may be better...or at least more "NSFW". For the language, of course.

/One ticket straight to hell please

Kruk's autobio "I Ain't An Athlete Lady.." is hilarious, tells all sorts of stories like this (although it's a touch inaccurate in a couple respects, like his number in San Diego and who wore it after him). Still, a great read, very recommendable, and miles better than Coste's book.

This is an episode of Without a Trace in the making! Former big leaguer gets kidnapped by insane former roomate and the FBI has to track him down. Jerry Bruckheimer are you hearing this?
