Bro-Hawk Intact and Better Than Ever, Shawn Andrews Does the Philly Media Rounds
On Tuesday afternoon, we mentioned that to our surprise, Shawn Andrews would be a guest of Mikey Miss on 950 ESPN; within a few hours (if not less), he'd also done Eskin's show, Comcast Sportsnet, and NBC 10, that we know of.
What's particularly odd in all of this—aside from the fact that his head spike (which he's affectionately termed a bro-hawk) has grown quite noticeably to a height Glen Plake would appreciate—is that after a very odd and mysterious period of rumor-filled silence, the depressed and recently reclusive Andrews has now willingly immersed himself in media coverage far exceeding anything else going on in Philly right now.
In each interview, Andrews comes off as a damaged, yet strong, contemplative man, but someone very much willing to discuss and confront his problems, and in a very public fashion at that. He is calm, monotone, and unwavering in his words, which were remarkably uniform from interview to interview.
Andrews appears sincere, and he is apologetic to his teammates and fans for any disruption his situation has caused, regardless of whether or not it was within his control. He confirmed his commitment to the Eagles, emphasized the support of Andy Reid and the front office, and matter-of-factly referred to his ongoing desire to one day wear a Hall of Fame jacket.
In addition to the the radio coverage we've already mentioned, you can also view video of Andrews' interviews with NBC's John Clark here and here. There is little chance this story will diminish anytime soon, and it's likely that the next wave of exhaustive coverage will be on the national level (once anyone can fit a non-Favre word in edgewise).

As long as Favre is still breathing and being a jerkoff, we won't hear a word about this on the national circuit. Fine by me, lets keep our problems in Philadelphia and let the rest of the country worried about the spoiled jerk that is Favre.

I would guess that rumors about being a gay, drug-using drama queen would lead one to get their side of the story out. And the meds are probably evening him out a bit depending on when he started them. He should have skipped Eskin and gone right to Spadaro. Its the same thing anyway.

Mentor? He refers to a mentor a couple times. Does anyone know who this is and if there helpful? If no one responses, mentor sounds like a dinosaur and I will pretend Shawn Andrews talks to dinosaurs and spread that rumor around.

story keeps getting stranger and stranger...
does anyone know if he showed up to any of the offseason workouts? or did this just start with training camp?

I believe he was at OTA's, but left early or something like that.

I wouldn't be surprised if his "mentor" is Dawkins, who also spoke shortly after Andrews the other day and said he dealt with depression early in his career. Shawn said in the first Daily News article that a "good friend" had referred him to a doctor in Philadelphia, so I wouldn't be surprised if this confidant is someone associated with the team.

I believe it was mentioned he only missed the last june workout but I cant confirm that. I think the reasoning why he is now more willing to talk about it is probably two fold. One his meds are probably working and he is on his way out of his current bout of depression since every experience I have ever had with it is that there are peaks and valleys of it. Secondly he probably wants to make people aware of his problem to either try to keep his money or what I am hoping help out other people. Though from the DNL interview with dawkins he called on the team to make his absence excused and allow him to keep his money. I like what a poster mentioned though and that donate the over 100,000 dollars to a mental health or depression focused charity. I know I know everytime celebrities have a problem all the do is throw money at it, but money helps fund research.

@teddy dawkins also mentioned in the interview that he tries to talk and help out young members of the team about his experience and that it is ok to get help.

i agree, the whole favre drama has put zero attention on the Eagles.
and maybe it is just me, but if i were the bucs i would rather have garcia than favre. outside of last year favre has been an average qb at best for the past 5-6 years.

I'm glad Mikey Miss got the jump on Eskin. It is laughable how much better Mikey Miss is than Eskin. The Locker Room is also pretty good. 950 is killing WIP.

I was watching ESPN FirstTake and they had Les Bowen on to preview the Eagles this season and they said nothing about Shawn Andrews so I guess no one nationally knows about his condition.

@ chris
It's not just you, but not because Favre has been an average quarterback. The '05 and '06 Packers were two of the worst teams he ever played on, with '05 being the only time in his career he had a losing record. He led the league in pass attempts both years, so you know something was up there. The four years prior are all above average QB seasons with trips to the playoffs.
But I wouldn't bring Favre in at this late date to try and run my offense. I'm not saying he would be a complete failure, I just not sure he is dramatic improvement. Guess it couldn't hurt though.

Ike Reese is saying that his mentor is his pastor.

Major - I heard a few years ago (I think during the T.O. saga) that every dollare collected in fines actually goes to charity - not just back into the Eagles coffers. I forget where I heard this, or even if it was the NFL, but I'm pretty sure this is the case.

On second thought, Google tells me it's a mystery...

Maybe ESPN should do some real sports journalism and find out...but only if Brett Favre gets fined.

anybody else thinking that "depression" is code for "massive drug habit"?
Posted by: Carl P | Wednesday, August 06, 2008 at 01:55 PM
When thinking about being depressed, I don't really think about a fro-hawk...
Just my 2 cents
The fro-hawk kind of gives me a sense of bi-polar or A.D.D

I heard today on WIP mid-day show (Ike Reese and Mark Eckel sitting in) that some people, even teammates are quietly suggesting that maybe he's using this as an excuse to not be at camp. They even referred to Andrews as a possible "drama queen." I don't know, just throwing that out there.
