Brett Myers Takes the National Stage
Ya know what would make this weekend complete? A series win over the Cards at Busch.
The Mets and Marlins both lost earlier today, and the Phils wait in the wings for the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball game tonight. Brett Myers will make his third start since being called back up from Lehigh. His first was pretty awful, but he turned in a real nice outing last time around. With Joe Blanton's W last night, another QS from Myers could really help maintain the momentum while Cole works through some struggles. When you think about it, if you looked at this staff on paper in March, it wouldn't be that bad... Can Myers and Blanton finish strong like Pete North, and shock the hell outta us?
It's not out of the question, America. /please?

John Kruk's pick for player of the game: Brett Myers

No offense to Myers, but I would have loved to see Moyer starting this nationally televised game. His pitching this year has been such a great story for us.

Baseball Tonight always like to get a cheap shot in on the Phillies...they were highlighting the Marlins upcoming stretch and mentioned the high ERA of the Marlins pitchers. Steve Phillips randomly mentions how how the Phillies ERA is...BTN sucks!

so no matter who we listen to tonight our ears will bleed. tonight is a big game though. hopefully we get a w tonight and myers pitches well.

"he didnt get the win and he didnt get the loss so he got an no decision"
Posted by: j-dawg | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 08:27 PM
"a" no decision
Posted by: j-dawg | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 08:28 PM
jesus...they are talking about brett favre...so sick of the favre shit!
Posted by: chris | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 08:39 PM
I agree Chris. I fell asleep watching SportsCenter and then woke up watching the game and hearing these two putzes talk about Favre. All of this crap about him is worse than having that damn Soulja Boy song or anything by Miley Cyrus being played on the radio. I just want to be shot everytime I hear it.
I wish something would happen so the speculation would end. I'm tired of ESPN orgasming over the guy.

I miss Harry.
Posted by: Steve | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 08:57 PM
If Joe Morgan talks about hitting zone one more time I'm going to scream.
Posted by: GreggyD | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 08:58 PM
screaming yet?
Posted by: j-dawg | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:04 PM
And in case you didn't know Joe Morgan is a hall of famer. All these two do its talk and worship Joe Morgans hall of fame status. They barely even talk about the games going on.
Posted by: Liam | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:05 PM
Lmao Greggy, he's rambling on about the fucking hitting zone again.
Posted by: Steve | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:05 PM
How is Joe Morgan still employed?
That's a great example of ESPN being completely out of touch with their viewers. If they gave a damn what the viewers thought he'd have been fired a long time ago.
Posted by: David | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:07 PM
He hasn't talked about the game in over an inning. And Miller just falls into his trap and feeds his ego. And occassionally tells you what the count is, like "oh shit, there's a game still going on." I wish I had been counting how many names Morgan dropped in that one inning alone.
Posted by: Smoore | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:11 PM
I just wanted to add this to my anti-Sunday Night Baseball argument...
Their announcers rarely talk about the game. Their always blabbering about some nonsense nobody gives a damn about. It's like watching the boringest talk show in the world while a basbeall game happens to be going on. Seriously, screw these guys.
Good effort by Brett almost beating out that grounder. When is the offense going to wake the hell up?!? This is so frustrating to watch because we should be smoking this team, and we're just letting them hang around.
Posted by: David | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:13 PM
@ Smoore
My thoughts exactly!
Posted by: David | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:14 PM
did morgan just call linda cohn, linda corn?
Posted by: chris | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:15 PM
Shut the fuck up Joe Morgan, shut the FUCK up.
Posted by: Steve | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:15 PM
drink everytime joe morgan drops a name
Posted by: j-dawg | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:17 PM
Lol, the latest analysis by Joe Morgan: Why Brett Myers said "My bad."
Posted by: Steve | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:18 PM
I stopped watching. Can't take Morgan and Miller anymore. Let me know if anything happens or if we manage to score a run.
By the way, anyone see Carrasco's line from his AAA debut tonight?
6 2/3 IP, 2 unearned runs, 4 K, 2 BB. Out of his 102 pitches 67 were strikes. I'd still like to give this guy a shot at the majors before the playoffs roll around. He could be our secret weapon, like when the Angels called up Francisco Rodriguez prior to the 2002 playoffs and he ended up anchoring the bullpen and leading them to a WS win.
Kinda hard to prepare for a guy you have no tape on, and with his stuff? Forget about it!
Posted by: David | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:19 PM
J roll really needs to get on base. That stat they showed at the beginning with him batting .233 to start the game, is a killer. Last year not only could this team comeback (which they still can), but it seemed they'd routinely jump out in front of teams and set the tone of the game real early.
Posted by: Liam | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Can you imagine Joe Morgan, Chris Wheeler, and Gary Matthews all in one booth with McCarthy doing his "I'm in the bomb shelter under CBP" reports?
I don't think we would hear anything about a single AB. Then again it might not work because Wheels might strangle Sarge first. I have this feeling he doesn't like him too much...
Posted by: GreggyD | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Morgan and Miller make Chris Wheeler look like a Hall of Fame announcer...damn i'm about to put this game on mute
Posted by: mattTHEbat | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:20 PM
Hey, did you guys know that Albert Pujols is a really good hitting zone right hander? Like, he stays his hitting zone instead of his strike zone? And that Ryan Howard does the same thing, that he's a low ball hitter? It's true.
Fucking Joe Morgan, I swear.
Posted by: Argive | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:22 PM
i got here late. why isn't victorino playing?
Posted by: jd | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:23 PM
Night off.
Posted by: mattTHEbat | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:24 PM
@ jd: Because Charilie is kinda stupid
Oh yeah, Chase just hit a homerun!
Posted by: Steve | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:24 PM
UTLEY
Posted by: jd | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:24 PM
Joe, how many times can you tell us that he has a line drive swing
Posted by: mattTHEbat | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:25 PM
Wow on the board just like that. Let's hope we can get another one of those for Brett who has looked damn good.
Posted by: GreggyD | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:25 PM
was utleys HR a line drive?
Posted by: chris | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:25 PM
The call on that homer was freakin amazing. I am sitting here thinking "Hey, that might go" and then they are completely oblivious, and then, "Oh, Utley just hit a HR" Ridiculous

It's nice to know that whenever I want to hear a grown man use the word "slugger" a million times all I have to do is turn on Sunday Night Baseball. Thank you, John Miller, for keeping the lamest baseball word alive and kicking.
Posted by: Pistols at Jawn | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:28 PM
@ Michael C
Took the words right out of my mouth. ESPN should invest in some new commentators. Put Kruk in the booth. He'll shove hot dogs covered in mayo in these guys mouths and do it all himself.
Posted by: GreggyD | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:28 PM
I really don't understand how these two are still employed. I live in Boston and even the Red Sox fans can come down to earth to agree with us mortals that these two suck. I don't think I've ever met someone who can stand listening to these two, so I just have no idea who they are still calling these games.
Posted by: Liam | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:28 PM
Homerun call:
"Chase Utley hits that pretty deep.........(Ignored by broadcast booth).....ball already in seats...."It's outta here!...."
Harry needs to fucking morph from thin air, kill these clowns, and call the game.
Posted by: Steve | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:28 PM
Did they really just take a break to show Favre's plane landing in Green Bay? Are you kidding me?
Posted by: smoore | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:29 PM
i hate brett favre!
Posted by: chris | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:29 PM
i am sure madden is over ther slurping farve tonight on the HOF game..
Posted by: chris | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM
How do you figure he didn't bunt at that? He just ducked with the bat in the bunting position.
Posted by: GreggyD | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:31 PM
And now we're talking about Yankees-Angels.
Posted by: smoore | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:32 PM
This umpire must be pretty damn inconsistent...according to the hitzone on ESPN.com all three of his pitches to Mather were strikes...clearly in the zone. Only 1 was called looking, the other 2 were balls.
Funny thing is Wellemeyer has been getting the high strikes called all night.
Posted by: David | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:33 PM
Maybe the umpire has a feed of the broadcast and has been looking at the hitting zone rather than the strike zone thanks to the incessant ranting of Morgan.
Posted by: GreggyD | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:34 PM
Anyone else find these NFL migration commercials oddly cool? The song is perfect and it's a cool idea i think. Gets me amped for football season. Although there's no eagles in it.
Posted by: Smoore | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:36 PM
@ Smoore: Yeah, it's a pretty decent commercial. Silly you, why would the Eagles be in it? ESPN actually noticing Philly sports teams? LOL.
Posted by: Steve | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:39 PM
They honestly spend more time talking about other teams and players than the ones playing. Mostly the Yankees.
Posted by: smoore | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:44 PM
He just said that whole list of trades so that he could toss in there "I talked to Griffey." And now we're going more into the trades. This is unbelievable. Every time I think I'm just a bitter fan whining about the announcers, it gets worse and worse and validates my complaints. If I wasn't on a delay because of the HD, I'd mute and go with the radio.
Posted by: smoore | Sunday, August 03, 2008 at 09:46 PM
Now see, we were actually talking about the game and now Morgan jumps to talking about the trade deadline and players who were traded out of nowhere. Get him out of the booth please. I'll fill in. I can't say I called Griffey last night, but I might give a little insight to what's going on.
It's been several minutes of Red Sox chatter now as the Phils just drew a walk. What the hell?
