Who Is More Unlucky: Johan v. Cole

Johan Santana could not have been too pleased last night with the lack of support his bullpen showed him. Santana has pitched very well this year for the Mets but his numbers don't reflect his dominance. That got the kids over at Crashburn Alley wondering who is more unlucky, Cole Hamels or Johan Santana?

Santana trails Hamels in quality start no-decisions, but trumps him in quality start losses. Hamels gets more than a half-run more on average and both pitchers’ defenses hurt their ERA about equally. Hamels, though, has a huge disparity between his current BABIP and expected BABIP (.086), while Santana does but it’s not nearly as much (.041).

How's your BABIP doing?

Baseball prospectus actually has a stat for this. Not sure what the NL numbers say, but as of yesterday the Unluckiest starter in the AL was none other than Joe Blanton.

for what it is worth

Johan has the name Johan, which sounds more like a ballerina name than Cole, ergo Cole is luckier... by virtue of the ballerina name test (BNT)

skies are very dark up here, very dark.

this game might not happen.

90% chance of rain tonight in Queens. I highly doubt they get this game in. Day-night doubleheader tomorrow? God that would be intense.

Plus, Cole has the natural nickname of "King," a huge plus in the Expected Nickname department (EN).

Aside: Atkins has been playing 1st for Colorado the last few games. I'd love to see him in Phillies pinstripes, but with this, it looks like Colorado is keeping both the current and future 3rd basemen (the future is now starting at the hot corner). I assume they'll ink him after this season.

You guys are cute and all. Ballerina and nickname and such.

But let's be serious.

I could have answered with, "Cole is luckier because he's sexier," but I respect his talent. Let's not get cutesy now.
