Phils Look to Take Maine Down a Peg in Game 2
God I hate the Mets. That's why I could smile all day today despite enduring the after effects the quasi-annual meeting of the Heavy Hitters Club (amateur fireworks so good it's scary [literally]). It was a hard-earned win for the Phils, and they could be in for more of the same tonight. The Mets #2, John Maine, has dominated the Phillies, sitting at 4-0 with a 2.05 ERA in seven starts against our guys. In Philly, he's 2-0, and his ERA dips below 2.00, so the dimensions haven't gotten to him yet.
But he can't stay unbeaten here forever, and the Mets look like they're in a K hole at the plate. And just like last night, if the Phils can't smack Maine around, but they stay close, the Mets bullpen is just horrid. Jamie Moyer takes the hill hoping to continue his solid season and give the Phils their fifth consecutive W, all against the NL East.
Go Rockies.

lets roll these mothers

Amen, Sponge-worthy. Moyer's gotta take us at least a solid five, then it's hammer time with the bullpen. We've got to hit Maine early and often. Can't let him have any confidence out there tonight. Make him second guess everything.
Do we have a lineup yet? If J-Roll leads it off, I've making a call for it.
J-Roll singles or walks, then steals to get to third. The irrepressible Utley knocks him in, and the mayhem begins.

On a humorous note, ESPN's preview of the game lists our only player on the DL as Freddy Garcia, and he's listed as Day to Day.
It's funny unless I missed something and we made another $10 mil mistake, that is.

Well, you were wrong about the J-Roll prediction...its ok...he'll get it next at bat.
At least Coste is starting again though...I can't stomach Ruiz anymore.

Good lord can we please make Ryan Howard take extra fielding and throwing every day until he stops playing like he's never put on a glove before?
Posted by: Loqiel | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 08:00 PM
Without that error, it'd be 3-2.
But I'll let it slide this time.
:)

I love it when the big man hits opposite field homers... think it makes the other managers think "ok why do we play a shift on him again?"
Posted by: Johnny G | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 08:22 PM
can the rest of our hitters take notes from moyers at-bat in the 5th... he makes maine throw 8 pitches and gets a walk out of it... jenkins was out after 2 pitches and coste only made him throw 3

I just want to see them run Maine's count to 120 or so. For the offense to have a chance, they need him to hit his limit.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 08:43 PM
looks like he just hit his limit the hard way
Posted by: Johnny G | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 08:46 PM
i forgot to say zing
Posted by: Johnny G | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Come on, Coste. Chapter 73.2(f) in your follow-up book is begging to be written.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:12 PM
Werth. You just committed a mortal sin. Not with the top of the lineup waiting, and despite there being two outs.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:20 PM
I can't be the only one here, can I?
Gordon in a tense situation? I'm going to start hitting the leftover booze from yesterday.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:29 PM
you better go get some more booze
Posted by: Johnny G | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:32 PM
Well there is the walk
Posted by: John | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:33 PM
Man.
In the words of the manager in Major League:
"You can go get him now."
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:34 PM
or "Tire World"

Is Myers ready to come back and take the set-up role yet?
Posted by: BadMotherFutley | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:37 PM
friggin Gordon
Posted by: Bryan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:37 PM
And there is the long ball.. God I hate Gordon, he is so damn bad. I can't believe the phillies management has kept him around
Posted by: John | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:37 PM
He needs to be placed on the DL already. He clearly has nothing left.
Quick! Let's act like Mets fans! I'm going to the Ben Franklin to jump! Who's with me!
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:47 PM
Ruiz hit a soft grounder in a clutch situation? What a shock.
Posted by: BadMotherFutley | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Where the Fuck is Dobbs? Ruiz? Seriously has Manuel lost his frigging mind?
Congrats Ruiz you are inching ever closer to the Mendoza line.
Posted by: John | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:48 PM
Dobbs was switched on deck with Werth. Tom Gordon has been an ungodly mess. Why not Seanez? Ahh, forget it...

The one thing I like about the 'pen is that when it collapses, it collapses. At least it gives me time to, e.g., take out the trash and know I won't miss a close ending.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 09:59 PM
Yeah but Dobbs should then still be available right?
I mean I would rather have Hamels pinch hit than Ruiz.
Posted by: John | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 10:03 PM
@ John:
Nope. He was in the game (i.e., not just on the steps, but the ump had him penciled in) when he was subsequently pulled.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 10:05 PM
Oh, must have missed that part, thanks for the clarification
Posted by: John | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 10:22 PM
Oh well. Not worried. Can't win every night, and am not going to curse the bullpen. Best in NL going into tonight, so you can't win every night.
Posted by: Benjamin | Saturday, July 05, 2008 at 11:29 PM
ill say this, i've been to probably about 40 phillies games and tonight was possibly the worst one I've ever seen, just for excruciatingly bad decisions. taking burrell out, having dobbs switch with werth, werth trying to get to 2nd, charlie letting gordon sit out there to rot, bringing seanez in, etc. the list goes on and on. just terrible
Posted by: ryan | Sunday, July 06, 2008 at 01:34 AM
there was way too many mets fans at the park tonight. and of course after the first couple of innings, they went quiet, then all of a sudden in the 8th, got loud again.
they just ride the wave. i hate the fucking mets
Posted by: brian | Sunday, July 06, 2008 at 01:57 AM
cant win every game
taking 3 outa 4 is good too
but, the phils lights out bullpen has been so good that sometimes they will just fall apart
oh well..... im expecting lights out tonight

I was at the game last night and I have a few curious notes. lots of mets fans there(no suprise). I have been to many mets phillies games and this by far had to be the best behaved crowd I have seen at one of these games. I saw one person get ejected. also in the lot tailgating before the game we had mets fan next to us and we brought out the beer bat and there was no heckling it was lets play a little game of dizzy bat wiffle ball. there were families with mets fan around us in teh 400 level and no one really heckled them other than good natured ribbing but no cursing or anything. I dont know what was the cause of the being well behaved was. whether the mets fan have given up on the season or something but it certainly wasn't sobriety cause the parking lot was packed with mets and phillies fans drinking heavily before the game. it would have been nicer if we had won though.

themajor - I noticed that Friday too. Really well behaved crowd. I hope that all Phils fans continue to take the high road and just wait for mets fans to take the initiative to do something stupid.
