Phillies Now Looking Up At New York
If you want to look at the glass half full, the Mets are now in a prime position to choke away another first place lead heading into the post season. Joking aside, this Phils team hasn't been exuding confidence as of late. Except for Brett Myers, which seems to make sense. You know, because he sucks.
Anyway, Jamie Moyer looked really sharp. Love that guy. But so did Oliver Perez who was helped out of a jam but otherwise pitched a nice outing for the Metros.
I don't believe this series was the make or break message sender that many were anticipating. It's unfortunate that the Phils are now in second but even if they were in first they'd still need to step their game up.
There's a lot of season left, get your act together.

You bitches just ate a shitsandwich...WIT WIZ.

@ RODRIGOO
True FAIR WEATHER Mets fan at his best. Working in NYC I haven't seen people wearing Mets gear since spring training. Now all of a sudden there are Mets fans again?
You're probably that guy who goes to the Bronx and starts rooting for the Yankees when the Mets are in the toilet.

I think the Phils have their eyes on George Sherrill. Burnett? Can they hit?

Fair weather mets fans, go back into your holes! Your team is in perfect position to choke back the lead like last year.
By the way, where was JRoll today?

Zo reports:
Charlie Manuel has two rules:
1. Hustle
2. Be on time.
Jimmy Rollins has broken both rules this season, the lastest came today when he showed up about an hour before the Phillies' series finale against the New York Mets at Shea Stadium. Rollins, who was benched earlier this season for not running out a pop fly, said he didn't agree with Manuel's decision this time. Here's some of what he had to say to reporters in the hallway outside the visitor's clubhouse:
Q: What happened?
A: I showed up after the bus, a little bit about an hour before the game.
Q: Why?
A: You can say traffic, but that really doesn’t change anything.
Q: Disappointed?
A: No, I mean, it’s the same thing I do all the time. I usually leave about 10 minutes after the bus as usual if I drive myself, but you can’t change lights and stuff. Oh well.
Q: Did you understand?
A: Well, we’re not going to agree on this one. I agreed with him last time, but we’re not going to agree on this one. I think he understood that, and I understood it. But he’s the manager. He has to set a precedent for certain players and you’re expected and held up to those rules, and that’s fine.
Q: If you don't agree, can you get past it?
A: Am I going to let it bother me? No, it’s already done. Me and Charlie spoke about it. It’s done.
Q: Was part of the decision that you’re a leader?
A: That was 100 percent of the decision. That was the complete decision. As I said, I understand. That’s part of it.

Jayson Stark says that the Phils may decide to use J.A. Happ out of the bullpen.
I say bring him up right now and see how it goes - I guess we would have to release Seanez or send down Condrey (if he has options left) in order to bring up Happ....but Romero has been shaky lately.
Today sucked.

How many teams in baseball can say that they don't have one single player in the realm of .300. Utley, our "leading hitter" ranks 48th on the list of qualified batting averages. How are we supposed to advance runners without a single person who fails less than 71% of the time!?!?
Posted by: Gaze | Thursday, July 24, 2008 at 04:33 PM
@ Gaze
If you want to put a percentage on how often a player fails (gets out), you don't look at batting average, but rather at OBP. Batting average, in general, is a vastly overrated stat.
And, FYI, our team OBP is .333 (above league average) and our team OPS is .775 (3rd in the NL).

@pilgrim
I read baseball prospectus as much as the next guy... While OBP and OPS are far better indicators of success, a walk doesnt score a runner from 2nd. Of course our OBP is high... but so even more telling is our LOB number! 22 times this season, the Phillies have left 10 or more runners stranded on base!
