Fireworks To Be Big Part of Opening Ceremonies in China
It's not exactly fulfilling my fantasy of seeing Gandalf produce fireworks that turn into dragons, but the Chinese plan to put on a fireworks display of epic proportions for the opening ceremonies on 08/08/08.
Cai Guoqiang, the main artistic director for the Opening Ceremony fireworks show, said that fireworks will be sent skyward from 1,800 sites around the city, including launching pads near Tiananmen Square and the major Olympic Games venues.
"We want the Olympic spirit to be seen and felt throughout the entire city on the evening of the opening ceremonies,” Cai said via Associated Press.
They are also claiming to be able to create "the shape of the Olympic Rings will be formed in the sky" for the first time ever. A quick YouTube video of the preview after the jump.

That'll surely clear up all the pollution issues.

What are the odds that if this fireworks display goes awry Cai Guoqiang winds up dead or in jail?

From what I've heard the guy that does the 4th of July show in State College (third largest in the nation)is providing the firing program for the show. If you have ever seen the show at State you know it is a bad ass 45 minute show that goes with the music perfectly. It isn't just on as background.

You're gonna stand there, owning a fireworks stand, and tell me you don't have no whistling bungholes, no spleen spliters, whisker biscuits, honkey lighters, hoosker doos, hoosker donts, cherry bombs, nipsy daisers, with or without the scooter stick, or one single whistling kitty chaser?

Incidentally, this might be a nice time for Brett to take a trip, perhaps to an Olympic fireworks launching pad.

Oh god, what are the odds this ignites the pollutants in the air and incinerates the entire city? I'd love the IOC to try and cover that up.
