Wes Welker Doesn't Like the Eagles Chances, DeSean is a Talker
The fun, most talked about story of the weekend surrounding the Birds was the quote from New England Patriots speedy wideout Wes Welker regarding his former teammate Asante Samuel. From USA Today:
"Asante's a great player, so it hurts not to have a guy like that. But then again, it's part of the business of the game," Welker said. "He chose money over championships, and that's the way it goes sometimes."
Some people found these comments insulting but I think it's all just part of the business, really. Come talk to me when you turn down a 50+ million dollar deal.
In more entertaining Eagles news, DeSean Jackson has been making his way around the Internet via YouTube and boy does this kid like to talk.
Inside the Iggles found this video of DeSean being interviewed at the 2008 rookie photo day. The interviewer asks DeSean how he feels about football cards or something and -- wham! -- the Eagles speedy rookie takes off on all sorts of tangents and thoroughly enjoys talking about himself.
Also, the kid obviously still needs to learn how to be an athlete in Philadelphia. When asked what players' cards he was excited to collect as a kid, the first three guys he rattles off... Emmitt, Troy, Michael.
Not good, buddy. Not good.

Wes Welker makes a good point. That's why he signed a five-year,$18 million deal with the World Champion -- oops.
/18-1

Congratulations to the 2007-08 Super Bowl Champions, the New England Patriots. Oh wait... bet he didn't think the Giants could win either.
Maybe this is just a "We're the Patriots and we're gonna win" attitude. Otherwise, it would be incredibly naive of him to believe the Eagles, or almost any other team, can't win a championship.

In the second part of that interview, the sound is awful and I can't understand anything he's saying.
But anyway...he's one of the worst interviews I've ever seen. I hate players like him with that gangster accent that talk themselves up as if everything that they do is better than anyone else. I understand that you have to have a little bit of that cockiness if you're going to make it in this league, but he just comes off as a jackass. I found myself rolling my eyes through the whole video and had to turn it off after 3:00 of that crap. He had better back all this talk up on the field.
Sorry, but I didn't like it when they drafted him and I still have a bad feeling...

Can I get a translator? Are they not teaching English at Cal anymore?

Samuel = 2 rings, Welker = 0.

its been awhile since we had to endure such douchebaggery from an eagle.

Touchdown city, here we come!
Posted by: Mick O | Monday, June 30, 2008 at 02:19 PM
Wow, I had to stop watching it. It was painful. Is this why he wasn't popular with teammates at Cal? Sure hope this kid can play.
Posted by: johndewar | Monday, June 30, 2008 at 02:26 PM
WOW!! Before watching I thought Pilgrim was exaggerating....I sincerely apologize and actually extend my congrats for being able to translate that word for word.
P.S. Deseasn I'm pretty sure they call that touchdown, red zone thing an ENDZONE.
If he's not Hester, he's not going to last long.

Aside from his inability to speak properly, I don't see the problem with the DeSean interview. He repeatedly mentions it's a blessing to play in the NFL and says he'll do whatever to help the Eagles. Sounds good to me. And he shows respect when talking about other players.
Everything here seems light-hearted. I'm sure it's a big thrill for a young athlete to be on a trading card. I didn't think there was anything cocky or douchey about it.
Also, I think I've said this before, but any comparison to Hester is totally unfair. What he has accomplished in two seasons will most likely never be matched by anyone.

Seriously...this dude better be legit or he is in for a rude awakening...You would of thought a few mini camps would have put him in his place...guess not. I can't wait to beat the pats in the superbowl this year.

I think maybe Welker thought he won a title the way the white fans in Boston slobber all over him...
Posted by: TH | Monday, June 30, 2008 at 03:17 PM
All hype.
Posted by: Lenny | Monday, June 30, 2008 at 03:42 PM
At least Bloom was a really nice guy. This guy just seems like an idiot. Just don't pull any Freddie Mitchell stunts if you know what's good for you, Jackson.
And Welker, 18-1 never sounded so sweet.

I thought you had to be some what smart to go to Cal.
Posted by: Scott | Monday, June 30, 2008 at 05:09 PM
Maybe I've been in Philly too long... that sounded normal to me... and I'm white. I need a vacation...

ohh my goooodness....coming from a die hard eagles fan i hope ray lewis does knock him out just once...
Posted by: john | Monday, June 30, 2008 at 08:17 PM
I think the Eagles are in the same boat as DeSean. They were happy just getting in the red zone last year.
There's 3 minutes I can't back.

Yes the Patriots were significantly better than the Eagles (and everyone else) last year, but last year's Super Bowl showed that the best team doesn't always win the Super Bowl. The Pats will probably still be better than the Eagles this year, but the Pats are going to have to get through the likes of Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Pittsburgh, and San Diego to get to the Super Bowl, while other than Dallas the NFC doesn't really have a big front runner. Does anyone really think the Giants were the best team in the NFC last year, let alone the NFL? They weren't nearly as good as the Pats, but they had a much easier road to get through, and by the time the Pats took care of the rest of the AFC they had nothing left. The Eagles will have a similar situation this year, if they can make it to the playoffs they have just as good of a chance to get to the Super Bowl as the Pats do.

DeSean!!! Dude, you do not bring up Emmitt, Michael, and Troy TWICE in one day. Twice in one YEAR is stepping over the line. This kid does not think before he speaks, he just opens his mouth and shit just falls out. WTF DeSean!? He just confirmed the disappointment in his work ethic I've been hearing about. No rookie talks smack like that and points out their Ed Hardy sunglasses and does anything but get their ass handed to them. Now we gotta watch Kelly and Thomas smoke us while DeSean does commercials for Ed Hardy. Welcome to Philly D-Sean.

what ever is what i say, who cares???
if the kid can play than let him run his mouth!!
Posted by: alex | Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 11:52 AM
That's a big IF the kid can play
Posted by: GreggyD | Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 12:44 PM
to GE:
That's nonsense. Actually you can make a strong argument that the Pats actually had the easier road to the SB last year. Who did they beat? They beat a depleted jacksonville squad missing key members on a defense that had carried the team all year. Then they beat a Chargers team WITHOUT LT - the best RB in the game and with Phillip Rivers nursing a torn ACL. That was the easiest road they've had in the last 8 years. They got a gift not having to play Indy.
The Giants, on the other hand, beat TB (unimpressive), then Dallas in Dallas and GB in GB (one of the toughest places to come in and win in January). The Giants caught fire and were on a roll. The Pats coasted to the SB and still lost. (actually the lack of good competition may be a reason why they lost)
Posted by: glenn | Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 03:41 PM
Glenn, basically what I was saying is that if the Eagles do make the playoffs they'll have an easier road. You're right, NE got lucky that they didn't play Indy and that they got to play SD with a banged up LDT and Phillip Rivers, but that's not going to happen again. The overall talent in the AFC is head and shoulders above the NFC right now, so Asante going to the NFC gives him just as good of a shot at a title, even if the Eagles arent as good as the Pats.
Posted by: Steve | Tuesday, July 01, 2008 at 03:57 PM
The theory that the AFC outclasses the NFC has been bought and sold for years now, and whether or not it was ever true could be debated.
