Quest for 600 Appears to Be On Hold Again
This evening's game thread is brought to you by Jay D.
Junior Griffey's quest for 600 home runs (soreness/age/yearly residence on the DL notwithstanding) continues tonight at the Bank [Update: Ugh. Looks like no Griffey again], and could very well overshadow a classic pitching matchup. The surprisingly-good Edison Volquez (7-2, 1.46) takes the rubber against the surprisingly-bad Brett Myers (3-6, 5.52). Myers has come on as of his last start however, (8.0 IP, 3 ER, 11K) and hopes to continue pitching like the ace the Phillies hoped he would be at the start of the season. The weather looks overcast for the game, and we can only hope they get the game in lest the rotation be messed up. I'd hate to see anything disrupt the rhythm both our starting pitchers and our bullpen have had lately.
What will the reaction be at the Bank if Griffey hits one out? We saw the fans boo The Pitcher Formerly Known as Tom Gordon when he walked Griffey last night. My guess is they give Junior a standing ovation, but we'll have to watch and see.
Chase Utley failed to hit a home run last night, going 2-3 with an intentional pass, and I'm sure we'll be watching him as well, to see if he can keep up this torrid pace. The Man leads the league with 21 home runs and is easily on pace to break Davey Johnson's home run record of 42 for a second baseman. One thing is for sure though: Chase will not be hearing any boos.
Here's hoping everyone can keep up the great play, that Ryan Howard can find his swing again, that we're limited in our exposure to T-Mac, and that we end tonight eleven games above .500.

Griffey needs to suck it up and play. I wanna see him play for a whole damn game instead of just his sportscenter highlights damnit.

might not get to see anyone hit tonight, there is already talk of making tomorrow a day/night double-header

This entire Griffey ordeal is stupid and pissing me off. It happened about 4 seasons ago when he was on the verge of #500 and in town...this is cheap on the Reds organizations part.

I agree with Carson; BS to keep him out just because he hits the Phils so well.

Does the Jesus add on the left of the screen have anything to do with Chase Utley?

As per CBS Sportsline: "This time off smells like the Reds want to save his [Griff's] milestone for the hometown fans." His real team is the M's anyway. Who cares where he hits it. Will they put an asterisk next to his #600 if it happens at the Bank? Sheesh, even Jay D. could hit one outta that park!!!!!!!!

I blame Tom McCarthy for jinxing the no-no at the middle of the 6th.

I'll have you know I have significant power down the right field line, thanks! :P

That is EXACTLY what I said. "Jesus, McCarthy, you jinxed it, dumbass."

Jesus. Howard better start getting hits with RISP. I can't take his sh*t swings anymore.

I think this whole thing is really dumb. I can respect the fact that people want to see it, but why against your own team? I don't care if he plays or not, and if he does, I don't care if we walk him every single time he is up. Adn Myers didn't want to walk him, and still gets booed. That's lame. Who cares? He's not on our team. That's the way I see it anyway, let him reach that milestone somewhere else.

Rollins and Howard are stinkin' up this homestand !! Myers came thru for us tonight and they left 5 RISP. I can do that for 10 million, but with more style . . .
