Reports: Flyers Sign Carter, Umby Looking Blue?
Sportsnet.ca is reporting that the Flyers and Jeff Carter have agreed on a 3-year deal believed to be worth at least $15 million. The Flyers' own Web site and Philly.com have not posted on it yet, so we're holding out awhile longer before calling it official. It sounds about right though, and both sides have indicated that the signing was almost a foregone conclusion since before the season even ended.
On the heels of this news, the Columbus Dispatch's Blue Jackets blog shares that
Rumors are spreading in Ottawa that Umberger, who attended Ohio State, could be headed to the Blue Jackets at some point this weekend. No word on what the Blue Jackets would be trading to Philly.
There's not much meat to the Umberger story yet, just some rumors, but it's definitely not something out of the question, and rumors in the NHL off-season usually aren't as far-fetched as they are in say, the NFL's.

I'm very happy that we re-signed Carter; he is a phenomenal talent. And Despite the fact that Umberger is young, it wouldn't pain me to see him shipped to another team. I think that his stock rose 1000% when he had those outstanding numbers in the playoffs, but he deserves to go to a team where he can shine. The Flyers don't have all the money in the world and he will get a good chunk of change.

Would not be sad to see Umby go, if they can get a decent d-man in return.

Umberger is definitely gone and I am not sure that it'll be for more than a pick. Flyers are almost over the cap # as is if Carter really did get overpaid for $5 million per.

@Mike Y: Didn't have time to do the analysis myself, but this site is pretty good for NHL cap numbers.

Umberger dealt to Columbus with the 119th pick (4th round) for the 18th overall pick (Luca Sbisa - #12 rated North American skater) and the 67th pick (3rd round).
