Caps Video Montages Need Improvement
A few random things I forgot to mention about my experience at the Verizon Center on Friday Night. The most egregious issue I had was with their use of Rocky IV montages during key stoppages of play late in the game. They showed clips of Ivan Drago, a Russian, beating up on a bronzed, chiseled, glistening Rocky Balboa deep in the heart of communism. Get the symbolism? Alex Ovechkin is Russian and the Flyers, like Mr. Balboa, hail from Philadelphia. So Drago pummeling Rocky in the early rounds was some cute footage.
But yo, video guy, Rocky wins.

maybe the flyers should play the end of the fight when rocky whoops the russians ass to get back at them. and make sure to cover denis tolpeko's eyes when it happens

Reminds me of the Eagles playoff game vs. the Bears back in January 2002. In a misguided attempt to pump up the Soldiers Field crowd, they started playing the Rocky theme. On the very next play, Jim Miller threw a pick and Hugh Douglas murdered him during the return.
That's what you get for playing our song.

Does this mean the Flyers' next round opponent will be Tommy "the Machine" Gunn?

one day my life will be "Rocky" reference free and there will be a championship trophy located in some office near or on broad street.
one day.........

While we didn't see any Rocky footage yesterday, one of the 3rd period montages had scenes from Invincible

Man, people just keep screwing up Rocky references. First Hillary Clinton compares herself to Rocky I Rocky, who lost to a black man. Now this. Come on, people.

Everything about the Caps' so-called "fans" seems second-rate. It's hysterical that they seem so proud of themselves for taking notice of their team with about 10 games left in the season.

The Caps try and take rocky, they tried to duplicate orange crush from a couple of years ago, and they tried to even put themselves the fans in the same league as philly fans. it is sad.
They are also stupid too. on one of thier message boards they were trying to figure out what vengance meant. they then after not being able to figure it out then resorted to giving up and saying that it did not make sense. They should just stick to cheering for the skins.

@ the Krisheim: I pointed that out to my wife (a native Washingtonian) with glee. I don't think she enjoyed irony quite as much as I did.
The cheese level of the Caps announcer should make Lou Nolan ashamed to be in the same profession.

when ovetchkin was skating off the ice sunday and they were saying he thought he was bleeding, i can't be the only person who thought "HE'S CUT!! THE RUSSIAN'S CUT!! AND IT'S A BAD CUT!!!"
i want constant rocky iv video and music during games 3,4, and if necessary 6.
i want clips of ovetchkin returning to the bench, sitting down after he hits richards saying "He's not a man. He's a piece of iron." get on this wachovia center crew.

One of my roommates is a Washington sports fan. They are the most obnoxiously ignorant sports fans on the planet. Just clueless about their own teams, and sports in general.

I just can't understand the fair-weather nature of Caps fans. Even their announcers seem out of it. The guy during game one kept calling periods stanzas. When did hockey become poetry. He also referred to the playoffs as the Calder Cup playoffs. The other thing that really irritated me was the fact that they kept calling the crowd, the Verizon Center faithful. Where were the "faithful" all season long. They only had 7 sellouts, six of which were towards the end of the season when they realized they were going to make the playoffs. I can't wait until they see how the Wachovia Center sounds tomorrow night. We'll show them the meaning of faithful.

Did you guys sell out your first playoff game yet? I checked for tickets yesterday and found a pair in the lower level. Just curious.....
Posted by: DC Dave | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 12:20 PM
DC Dave, I don't know where you checked, but I can't find any on comcasttix.com or ticketmaster.com I CAN get them for game 5 and 7 in DC though!

Flyer's fans need Jim Jackson to think for them. They are the most biased fans on the planet. Flyer Commentators are the worst around. I get the Center Ice package (yes there are other teams in the league) and no other announcers are as biased. And as far as Faithful fans go, I went to 3 games at the end of last season at the Wachovia and guess what, the place was dead EMPTY! Keep hyping how great Philly fans are because once they lose you guys turn your back on them instantly. I should know, I'm a Phillies fan.

I always hated the Caps but I do like there arena. It's nice to be able to walk right out into the heart of the city. It's a shame we can't pull this together for our stadiums. We keep building them out in industrialized zones. I hope they build up the area like all the rumors are stating.

"I went to 3 games at the end of last season at the Wachovia and guess what, the place was dead EMPTY!"
They were dead last in the NHL last season. There aren't many fans in anywhere that can stomach that.

Uhh you get cable tv up in "Calagary?"
Posted by: jbj | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 01:56 PM
and DCDave, talking about sellouts? I like how there are enough Flyers fans in the Verizon Center to dictate the chants.

My roommate is a Washington fan and she is the most clueless "sports fan" that I have ever met. When I asked her to name some Caps players, she was stuck after one, Ovechkin. I don't remember her watching one hockey game until there were about 13 games left in the season, and then she asked me every 5 minutes why the whistle was blowing and what was going on.
Posted by: Mandy | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 02:13 PM
All I know is I just pulled up a ticket down low for tonight's game through comcasttix.com. That's pretty pathetic for such a "hockey market". People in glass houses as they say. And don't believe what you hear from the NBC guys, there may have been 400 flyers fans at the game on Sunday....
Posted by: DCDave | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 02:51 PM
One ticket? Big freaking deal. I bet it's the buffet/tailgate package that they charge a couple grand for. Doesn't count! Go gome!
Posted by: Bryan | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 03:02 PM
I don't live in Calgary. I live in NY now. (Ugh Rangers). I'm just saying fans are the same everywhere. The Wachovia Center was empty when I went last year and your saying the Flyers were dead last. It's the same thing in D.C. There are also Flyers fans who don't know more then 3 guys on Philly. It's ridiculous to compare fans especially when your team has had the benefit of being in the race for so long. Show some overall hockey respect and stop being so biased. Canadian fans make you all look weak... And guess who just picked up tickets for Thursday's game with ease for 85 buckaroos!
Posted by: Calgary Guy | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 03:15 PM
wait, was that power play killed off? there wasn't anything over the loudspeakers to tell me either way. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW!??! if only I was back at the Verizon Center!!
enjoy your 2 weeks of "hey hockey exists where I live" DCDAVE, it won't last long.
Posted by: tom | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 03:18 PM
hahaha @ Tom, when the series is over, that guy can go back to doing tractor pull commercials "this sunday sunday sunday, it's going to be madness madness madness at Raceway Park!"
Posted by: Bryan | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 03:22 PM
"And he scores for a taste of tasty cake!" Now that's not cheesy.
Posted by: Calgary Guy | Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at 03:25 PM
benefit of being in the race for so long?
the capitals have the best player on the planet and they still can't sell tickets.
and i don't want to hear this "i just bought tickets" bullshit. yeah, i bet if i walked up to the game thursday night i could buy tickets from a guy on the street too! look at me! at least i'll be wearing the right colors, i wouldn't suggest bringing on the red:

HAHA. Typical Filthadelphia. Just pure filth no two ways about it. Zero respect for anyone. I guess being one of the top ten highest crime cities in the country rolls over into your sports events too.

That's classless on both posts.

Could you kiddies all grow up and play nice?
Thanks.

flyers were 4th in attendence in 2008 and 7th in 2007 and 4th in 2006,2004 3rd in 2003 and 3rd again in 2002 and 2001 http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attendance?year=2007
so i think we are among the most loyal fans in the NHL
p.s washington was 24th this year in attendence and the flyers beat out 4 of 6 canadian tams
GO FLYERS!!!!
