Stark on Mets-Phillies: There Will Be a Brawl.
If you're excited about the 19 games the Phils will play against the Mets this season, you're not alone. Speaking on SR950's morning show today, ESPN's Jayson Stark discussed how this is becoming one of the greatest rivalries in sports, and that we might see some real fireworks between the teams in '08:
"There were guys in that locker room the other day suggesting there will be a brawl this year."
Getcha popcorn ready!
For the audio, follow this link. It's a little over 9 minutes into the interview, toward the end. Before that, it's mostly Mitchell Report/Clemens stuff.

he never says which locker room that was mentioned in

Lovin it.
Unfortunately the Phils are in about an 0-5 hole already..... they'll probably face Santana that many times.... best lefty in the majors might set the strikeout record

Carl, don't be scared. Santana led the AL in home runs allowed last season. Pitching against the Phillies lineup, especially at CBP, is difficult enough without being prone to long ball.

Any predictions on off-the-field fights? Put me down for punching one pregnant woman in a Mets T-shirt.
:)

If there was 1 guy from both lineups that I'd want on my side in a fight, I'd have to pick good ol' Pat the Bat. Howard would run a close second, but Pat is just one mean looking mother trucker. Every time he comes up to bat, it looks like he wants to ram the ball right back down the pitchers throat. That and he's a pretty big guy who looks like he's been in his fair share of fights and came out on the winning side of them all.

Is Stark talking about on the field or in the stands? Because I think both will happen.

"Speaking on SR950's morning show today, ESPN's Jayson Stark discussed how this is becoming one of the greatest rivalries in sports..."
we could only hope so. IF both teams stay competitive over the next 5 years and really do some battles, then maybe, but historically, despite the new york-philly natural rivalry, there hasn't been an especially intense phillies-mets rivalry. i remember reading about this last year at some point.

Maybe we can resign Ugueth Urbina for a few fights.

I'm down for the fights on the field and in the stands or in the parking lots. All I have to say is our coaches better watch out for Pedro. He seems to go after them more than the other players. Don Zimmer will back me up on that one. But I'm fairly confident Old Chuck will protect his pals when this happens he didn't get that stutter without getting into a few bar brawls. Fans don't worry about knocking the sense out of the Mets fans we'll tell them how to get home after we whoop their asses again.

I'm down for a good Phillies-Mets brawl, be it on the field, or in the stands ...
But now that the Phillies are the defending division winners, and the whole city is behind them ... can we all please ban together as fans, and make sure that NEVER AGAIN will Mets fans out-number Phillies fans in our own ballpark ??

^ I'll second that.

I'd love to see a brawl in person. I'm going to as many Phils vs. Mets games at the Brick Cit House as possible this season. I love this rivalry, it's good for baseball, the teams, and the cities.

Fuck. Yes.
BTW: I second the guy who said they'll be going to as many Phils-Mets games as possible. Mets fans should not be made to feel comfortable in our ballpark. We have the Phillies and their marketing dept. to blame for some of that; they used to aggressively advertise on New York radio stations.

I know it sounds crazy, but let's not boo the Phils this year...I don't think it does any good. And don't throw hot dogs on the field either (that first college night was a disgrace).
Posted by: Rob | Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 08:52 AM
But will there be blood?
To this rivalry I say Yes, please. Anything to remind ESPN that baseball rivalries can exist outside of Boston/New York/L.A.

"We have the Phillies and their marketing dept. to blame for some of that; they used to aggressively advertise on New York radio stations."
Yeah, right, that's the reason mets fans pour into your ballpark, because your marketing department advertises. Give me a break. We go there to support our team, it's close enough, and we can get tickets - not because we heard a Phillies commercial on the radio (which I've never even heard of).

@Jeff:
I used to work in North Jersey. They used to advertise on the FAN all the time for New York fans to come to the Philadelphia ballpark. Just because you didn't hear it (can't afford a radio?) doesn't mean it didn't happen.
Actually you probably come here to watch to watch the Mets because Queens is a such a frigging hole. I'd go to South Philly too if Shea were my other option.

i dont know...I think Wright and Jose Reyes can fight and you know Pedro will throw at dudes. They key is, do we have anyone in our pitching staff who will stand up and put some chin music to someone? I think that remains to be seen. We know Myers would, if the batter was a girl lol.

Wes Helms is 6'4" 220 and has kickboxing experience. Perhaps the Phillies should keep him on the roster as their enforcer?

The dude that's going to punch a pregnant Mets fan is a typical Philadelphia fan. An inbred who prefers to fuck his sister. You guys are a fucking joke. Fuck you.
Posted by: Matt | Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 04:56 PM
Matt, that was not nice. I'm all for some lighthearted trash talk. It's healthy and fun. But once you start talking about how much
xxx is a fucking joke" or "xxx fans fuck their sister" it gets unfunny and ignorant.
Can you grow up a little? I don't want to have to start deleting every ignorant comment by either teams fans.

I see there are a lot of "Internet Tough Guy Magazine" subscribers posting today.
Posted by: Tartan69 | Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 05:38 PM
Yes, because I seriously would punch a pregnant woman.
Do you ever read Deadspin? How about Kissing Suzy Kolber? The Big Picture?
I may "prefer to fuck [my] sister," but you're the moron who can't separate edgy humor from reality. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at 07:57 PM
I'm not trying to cater to the lowest kind of humor here. If that's what you're into, leave those comments on the sites you mentioned. I've never even heard of The Big Picture.
I think we're pretty open about our comments but when Mets fans come over here and the comments get completely off subject and UNFUNNY it's no longer cool.

The fighting off the field, between fans, is a DISGRACE.
Talk trash all day long, but for the love of God it's baseball, and when you get into a physical fight over it you are a pathetic motherfucking ninny. Honestly, it's a ridiculous, low-class display of babyish nonsense. If you fight over a baseball game (THAT YOU'RE NOT EVEN PLAYING IN), you are childish scum. I didn't even get into fistfights in little league, so it's not even childish - it's infantile. Petulant pussies who don't have any self confidence trying to prove that they're The Man by proxy through their teams, or by beating up some poor bastard who just wants to go to a game and root for his team.
I've been to FIVE phils/mets games in Philly so far this year, and I'm going to one in September at Shea. A LOT of the disgraceful showing I've seen in Philly has come from Mets fans who came for a fight where a baseball game just happened to be scheduled. Regardless, anyone who gives in to that kind of crap is just absolutely pathetic. I love trash talk, but physical intimidation and confrontations are absolutely ridiculous. They make the world a worse place to live in, and make going to a game a lot less fun.
