It's Officially Official: MLS Is Coming to Philly
It is with great pride that we finally say, "DC United and the Red Bulls suck! Eff you, FC Dallas!"
Major League Soccer unveiled plans for the league's 16th team today, as MLS Commissioner Don Garber awarded Philadelphia an expansion team that will begin play in 2010. The Philadelphia MLS team will play in a new 20,000-seat stadium to be constructed as part of a major development project in Chester, PA.
No club name or team colors revealed yet, but we're still pushing for AS Philadelphia. The release does say that the stadium will be accessible via Septa's R2 line.

I am glad that we finally have a MLS team. I'm not even a fan of the MLS but will be a huge supporter of the new club.

I was hoping for Chester FC, but I guess it isn't really fair to copy off of a Premier League team.

Soccer Hoolighans should fit in nicely in Chester!

Socc-what? Huh? This is a sport too?
I'm confused.

i would really like to see them wearing the green and black similar to another certain philly team.. if you notice, there aren't any green teams in MLS.

do they allow checking in soccer yet?

What about the Sons of Ben?

it's nice that they are putting it in Chester. It's almost like throwing the Delawarians a bone.

I care more about the fact that Chester is getting a stadium that hopefully will be used for concerts also. I for one think it is a pain in the ass to have to go to Camden for any good concerts, this stadium will have much better accessibility to everyone in southeast PA.

You can call me a hater, I am. I don't like soccer and can't for the life of me figure out how this got approved. On the other hand though I hope that this ends up in a positive way the way some people think it will. I reserve my right to have doubts though.
Good luck Chester soccer team. I will support you, but form a great distance.

This is cool, a shame the MLS hasn't really sky rocketed yet, I would say that this country will need at least another 10 years or so with the MLS prospering before Soccer becomes even close to being relevant.
I wonder what they will name the team

I agree with Kevin whole-heartedly. The MLS is a joke. Look, I'll openly admit I'm not a soccer fan, but I watch enough of the Premier League to know good soccer when I see it and bad soccer. Watching the MLS is slightly less fun than watching cheerleading competitions on ESPN 2.
Oh and the cheerleaders are tougher than 90% of MLS players anyway.

will buy season tickets and support my heart out. i think its something that will be embraced in the philly area, especially with the suburban leagues all over the place and how can we forget Bobby Convey?

The thing that will make or break this is the stadium and the stadium atmosphere. Look what CBP has done for the Phillies, attracting a youthful and vibrant crowd. If this stadium can deliver a fun time, cheap tickets, and a train so I don't have to drive...sounds good to me.
Anyone feel like going to the soccer game and getting wasted?

R2 stop is nice, I'll be taking advantage of that once I get my season tickets.

MLS could flourish if they could shell out big money for overseas players. If 'dem Europeans see a lot of dollar signs in front of them, they will come here and play better soccer, which will force other teams to go out and steal some players from around the world.

soccer... i've heard of it before. aren't the players forced to wear kilts?

Who is Bobby Convey?

Fair enough Kev. Rare to find a classy "hater." I do think we're gonna surprise a whole lot of people with this team can draw, and it's gonna be fun to jam some crow down the throats of those a little less classy than yourself.
