Carlos Beltran Says Mets are Team to Beat
With (Santana), now, I have no doubt that we're going to win in our division," Beltran said. "So this year, to Jimmy Rollins, we are the team to beat."That's what Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran had to say.
I have no problem with the Mets acting confident, but to go out and address Jimmy Rollins personally? That's seems a little classless if you ask me.
So Jimmy, we anxiously await your response. And, of course, we hope it happens on the field.

-1 originality point, Carlos...

Yeah, that was a pretty lame comment from Beltran.
This season can't start soon enough. The Mets don't have anyone that kills the Phillies. Who knows, Johan may be that guy for them but he's only going to face them 3 or 4 times this year. Our Met killers play everyday.
See you on April 18th Carlos!
Posted by: GE | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 04:04 PM
The Mets sure are talking a lot of shit coming off the MOST EPIC COLLAPSE IN BASEBALL HISTORY. Congratulations David Wright, you seem to be the only person who realizes the Phillies beat the Mets last year when it really mattered.
By the way Beltran, you're still not even close to being the player you were with Houston. Nice strikeout in the NLCS two years ago, douchebag.
Posted by: Chris | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 04:46 PM
Wow, Carlos, think of that one all by yourself? Will you be carrying Moises Alou's walker or can he carry it by himself?
Beltran hangs up good numbers, I guess, but does anyone else find him a bit overrated?
Posted by: johndewar | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 05:11 PM
I'm surprised Carlos had enough oxygen to make those statements, seeing as he and the rest of his Met buddies have been too busy choking.
Saying the Mets are the team to beat? Fine. Calling out the MVP on the team that whipped your sorry asses? Not cool.
Don't the Mets always get the big names and then suck? You decide.
Posted by: Jonn | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Seriously, Carlos Beltran should get AIDs from his gay latino lover and be forced to retire. How are you going to start making guarantees when you're not even the best player on your team, or the 2nd best, or the 3rd. When Beltran wins an mvp I'll listen to what he has to say.
Posted by: paul | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 07:03 PM
Jimmy is too classy to get into a media war with the Mets.
His response will come on the field.
Posted by: ricky | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 07:10 PM
I love Philly fans, me being one of them. What a cocky, arrogant thing to say, and especially directed twords Jimmy. Die in a fire Beltran.
Posted by: The Polish Punch | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 07:19 PM
I love it! Beltran is talkin' tough because his New York team spent lots of money to help save their sorry bunch of arrogant, passive underacheivers in 2008! More reason to get this season started so our team can prove who's best on the field!
Posted by: Michael Collazo | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 08:01 PM
We also have this from Beltran today:
“I’m not where I want to be," Beltran said. “The test won’t come until I run the bases."
So... Santana's gonna run the bases for ya?
Posted by: Matt P | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 08:07 PM
All of you Phillie Fans are in for a long year. Carlos can say what ever he wants because unlike Rollins talking last year, This guy has actually one a playoff game. Philadelphia is the City of LOSERS. 08 is NY'S year Baby! First Big Blue, now the Metropolitans. Somebody tell Brett Myers wives arent their to be beat. lol. PHILLY SUCKS. LOSERS!
Posted by: beltran | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 08:12 PM
as usual, a mets fan shows up to elevate the discourse.
Posted by: mark | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 08:16 PM
eh, I am doing the same thing on their turf at metsblog. Its actually pretty fun but i wish someone over there was rational. They talk out of their asses.
Posted by: ill | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 08:29 PM
Listen, I propose this guys, we put all the Met player's wives with severe cases of feminism on the field and we schedule a Brett Myers start, that'll teach them because thats probably the only way the Phils will be doing anything thats close to beating against the Mets in 08

If anyone should be talking about classless like you guys are about Beltran, it ceratinly should not be PHILLY FANS!
Posted by: Justin | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 08:34 PM
Most of the Mets players are Hispanic, where they generally treat their wives much worse than Brett Myers treats his wife. I doubt you are going to find much support there Chris, at least not without the Mets being considered hypocrites.
Posted by: ill | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 08:39 PM
Wow great comeback justin, what does somebody's race have to do with anything. Clearly predictable for a philly fan with probably little to no experience with the Hispanic community would say something so preposterous that it makes neither worth nor sense responding to it. I guess most people in philly are indeed racist.

Is there any good sports team in that cease pool you Philadelphia? Penn sucks, Philly sucks, Eagles suck, Flyers suck. Wow now that I think about, I truly feel sorry for you mongrels in Philly and I understand why most of your population consist of either retards or deutchbags. I would rather live in Flint Michigan then live in your shitty town.
Posted by: Chris | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Wow, Mets fans fail English? That's unpossible!
What's a cease pool Chris? Never heard of that before.
Carlos Beltran one a playoff game beltran? What does that mean? The only thing I remember him for in the playoffs with the Metrosexuals was striking out looking with the bases loaded to end the NLCS.
What don't you classless Mets rats go enjoy that craphole known as Shea before they rightfully blow it to hell? That's got to do a lot more good than dumbing down the comments section here.
Posted by: Steve J | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 10:24 PM
To all the Philly haters posting on here...die in a fire, preferably in Shea stadium, and take that arrogant attitude with you you worthless sons a bitches.
Posted by: The Polish Punch | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 11:11 PM
It's funny that these morons from New York sit here and say that Penn sucks and so on, then proceed to call us retards and douchebags. If you want to drag U of Penn into this that's fine by me. I'd rather have Penn than any shit bag school in the entire state of New York, and don't even try to say that Colombia compares to Penn. Penn boasts the premiere business school in America, both undergraduate and graduate, and most of the students that attend that school are from the Philadelphia area. They then proceed to run all of the businesses in New York that make your city great.
Posted by: Paul | Saturday, February 16, 2008 at 11:35 PM
Classless? The Mets? No, Enrico, you surely can't be serious!
Posted by: MSH | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 12:20 AM
Let's give some respect to our northerly "brothers". They've somehow managed to drink away the memories of the worst collapse in history (coupled with our superior run) within 5 months. I'm impressed, but then again, it might have to do with a total lack of long term memory to begin with. Come to think of it, they probably just refuse to admit they wake up every night in a cold sweat from a nightmare involving J. Roll banging their respective wife/girlfriend/gay lover (likely the latter).
Posted by: Benjamin | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 12:54 AM
to the guy who posted as "beltran". your post was lame the first time you posted it over a Zo's blog. try again. if mets choked, then so did the pats? which victory would you prefer to claim?
Posted by: mets suck | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 01:08 AM
Best thread ever.
Posted by: The Polish Punch | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 01:22 AM
The house that J-ROLL built? Beltran owns that building. As a matter of fact, when the Mets come to that little league park, its like batting practice. Lo Duca didn't even need to shoot up before games there. April 18th, there will be plenty of Orange and Blue. All of you Philly fans will be talking igles football by June. lol Phillies were out faster than you can say Philly is a dump. lol LOSERS!
Posted by: Justin | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 10:11 AM
House that J-Roll Built? Has anyone even called it that? That may be the worst thing I have ever heard. We don't need to steal our nicknames and traditions from the Yankees, we do our own thing. Buddy of mine was in Shea when Dobbs hit that grand slam last season and he said the place went silent because the Mets knew it was over. Right there is when we slammed the door. How beautiful of a scene that must have been? A quiet Mets fan would be close to Nirvana for me.
Posted by: ill | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Mets fans come to this website and to our ballpark because of their intense feelings of inadequacy. What's the matter? Your dad couldn't get Yankee tickets?
Of course if I rooted for a team based in fucking Queens I'd come to Philly, too. Notice how everyone brags on New YOrk, yet those that brag on New York don't live there? Because it's a fucking hole.
Posted by: johndewar | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 11:00 AM
The point has been previously made, but I want to further ensure the sophistication of Met fans (maybe I shouldn't type in more than two syllabul words? I'll type slower for you Mets fans).
"Carlos can say what ever he wants because unlike Rollins talking last year, This guy has actually one a playoff game."
Capitalization within the sentnce and "won" written as "one". Sure, you "one" a playoff game, but you're a freaking moron. We Philly fans may be mean, nasty, and blue collar workers, but you Mets fans are at the level of high school drop outs.
Once again, until the end of the 2008 season WE are the 2007 NL East division champs. Take it from us, I dare you. But don't talk smack after you had the GREATEST meltdown in baseball history. That's ridiculous.
Posted by: Jonn | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 11:13 AM
Again, Philadelphia is the City of Losers. Enjoy your division title. You guys can talk when you actually win a playoff game in some sport. I would rather have old players than a bumbling stiff at 1st base who cant field a coal because he's a fat f**k. Good to see he's playing at a fair level and off the juice. Slimmed down. lol. Rollins will never ever have a year like last year. He played way over his head. this year: 270 15 hr 65 rbi and a 3rd place finish. Enjoy Kevin Kolb after you losers run Mcnabb out of town. Hope you saw that Giant Parade down the Canyon of Heroes because that was the warmup to October 2008. LOL
Posted by: Justin | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 11:49 AM
Speaking of classless, remember when that Mets fan was pointing a laser pointer into the eyes of Edgar Rentaria?
Remember when Vince Coleman threw firecrackers at a young fan?
I dont know why you're calling Howard a bumbling stiff, Justin. Delgado isn't exactly the most athletic guy on the field either.
Posted by: Chris | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Justin, how are you going to talk about our first baseman being fat and crappy (Field a coal? Really? Who says that? How are things in 1895?) when you guys throw Carlos Delgado out there and pretend like it's the same Delgado from 3 years ago. He's a washed up bum who hit almost 50 less RBIs than our boy Howard.
To put it in terms your brain will understand though: suck it.
Posted by: Steve J | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 01:00 PM
When Jimmy did it, he did it to hype HIS team not as an attack on the Mets. Beltran does it to attack JRoll. Only difference is Jimmy did it without any major acquisitions and Carlos did it after they got the best pitcher in the game.
So what does all this mean:
Carlos=no backbone.
Posted by: Castor&Cottman | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 01:46 PM
Philadelphia has the worst case of second-city-syndrom in America. Rocky and Cheesesteaks is all you have."HEY LOOK AT US. WE PUT BEEF JERKEY ON A HOT DOG ROLL AND CALLED IT A CHEESESTEAK."
Posted by: Rumplewootskin | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 01:52 PM
I like how all the Mets fans have forgotten how we took 12 of 18 last year against them, including the last 8
Posted by: Paul | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 02:03 PM
Hey Rumple, the last time the mets won a world series was 86.....dont act like you guys have dominated the NL. Our shortstop said we were the team to beat with no major offseason signings and he not only was right he also got MVP. You and all you metropolitan mongoloids should be giving the phanatic blow jobs into the next century....oh by the way WORST COLLAPSE IN BASEBALL HISTORY
Posted by: castor&cottman | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 02:31 PM
Justin, who are you talking about being on juice, because if it is howard then it shows how much of a ass bag retard you are. Howard has been huge his whole baseball career, and last time I checked the Phillies haven't had any trainers that have been accused of supplying steroids in the club house.
You talk about our trashy players, how about Lawrence Taylor, who hasn't been off of coke since 1982. Or Mark Gastineau who was on roids and had to quit football because they were cracking down on his use.
You say our franchises are a joke at this moment, when New York has the fucking Knicks who will suck until at least 2015, with their womanizing retard of a president, Isiah Thomas. The list could go on and on about degenerates that have played for both cities, but we're not the ones who started this shit by bringing up brett myers. His wife has forgiven him, but somehow that doesn't matter in Queens.
Posted by: Paul | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 03:21 PM
[who cant field a coal]
I think he meant to say "catch a cold." What a fucking retard.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 03:52 PM
Keep talking Mets fans. We'll see who is laughing when Santana blows out his elbow and requires Tommy John surgery. We'll also see who is laughing when the other people on the rotation pick up where they left off last year, and the bullpen continues to blow leads whenever given the opportunity.
Mets: Delgado (old and overrated), Reyes (overrated), Castillo (past his prime), Wright (best player on the team), Schneider (no better than Lo Douchebag), Geezers in the outfield (nothing special)
Phillies: Howard (prime of his career), Utley (future MVP), Rollins (reigning MVP), Feliz/Helms/Dobbs (a decent platoon), Burrell (Met Killer), Victorino (underrated player in all aspects), Jenkins/Werth (a better platoon than people think).
Am I supposed to be scared of a team coming off the most epic collapse in baseball history? They have to prove they are for real first. Beltran's just trying to justify why he hasn't lived up to his big contract and why New York hated him up until last year.
Posted by: Chris | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 04:34 PM
I have been a Phillies fan since I was four. Last year was great, watching us dominate the Mets and their epic collapse. As a die-hard Philly fan, I've been to every home game since '91, and last season may have been the best of my life. I'm sorry to say this guys, but Johan changes everything. The Mets are going to win the NL East this year.
Posted by: chuck | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 04:50 PM
Well spoken Chuck. Finally a Phillie fan with a half a brain. Santana is the best player on either side. As for you Chris, for you to come on and just say this guy is old and he's overrated means nothing. Your a biased fan who is in denial that the Phillies did not take advantage of their one moment of glory last year. I will ask the question of right now in their career, who has more potential Reyes or Rollins? Rollins played over his head last year. He's not that great of a player. I will give him his props because he was great last year and he killed the Mets. The Mets have their problems such as Alou and Church and Delgado, but the Phillies have no 3b, no catcher, Geoff Jenkins is a stiff who k's every a.b and Moyer is shot.El duque has at least won championships and is still around. The Pen is bad. Lidge on Opening day will get booed off the mound after L Millz takes him deep for a granny in the 9th. That will be the end of Lidge for the year. Bottom line, Santana and Pedro is the best 1 2 in the game. Eat that Loserville.
Posted by: Justin | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 05:16 PM
Santana was 15-13 last year with a high ERA last year. Tell me how that's not overrated.
Posted by: Chris | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 05:58 PM
Are you fucking serious saying Pedro is going to be good this year, the guy is fucking toast. I'll agree that Santana changes what would have been a runaway for the phillies this year, to a tight race, but it's not written in stone he's going to bring the mets a pennant. Reyes for that matter puts up these good stats then curls up like a little girl when a game means something, where was he down the stretch last year?
Posted by: Paul | Sunday, February 17, 2008 at 07:05 PM
Hamels > Santana. Cole will have better numbers than Santana this year, CBP and all. Bank on it. Feeble attempt by Beltran to try and rally a bunch of chokers.
Posted by: gootman | Monday, February 18, 2008 at 09:39 AM
CARLOS BELTRAN STRUCK OUT LOOKING WITH BASES LOADED IN THE BOTTOM OF THE NINTH IN THE 2006 NLCS. Do any mets fans actually realize this, you cannot make a comment like this unless you have delivered in the clutch what an idiot, have fun batting .275 again (at best) and watching chase utley jimmy rollins and ryan howard all out hit your best hitters good call beltran moron
Posted by: mdubbs22 | Monday, February 18, 2008 at 10:58 AM
J-Roll + Cole Hamels + Ryan Howard + Chase Utley >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> The entire Muts team combined.
Throw in Kendrick, Burrell (Mr. Met killer himself), Romero, Flash, and Vic and that spread grows even more.
