Downie Recalled Again, Set to Play This Weekend
Tim Panaccio reports that the Flyers have recalled talented but troubled winger Steve Downie, who should play this weekend against the Devils and Maple Leafs. Usually we don't reserve billing for the Flyers call-ups, but we're in the middle of four days without hockey, and Downie has a special place in our hearts after being issued a 20-game suspension for the hit below, which to us, is just part of the game we grew up loving. The game has changed, however, and now it's time to see if Downie has. With 114 PIM in 21 games with the Phantoms, including at least one game misconduct that landed him a sit-down with Paul Holmgren (who was at the game), it'd be a stretch to say he has his temper under control.
But the Flyers are a team that needs a little fire right now. And Downie's never been short on that. Hopefully he can stay on the ice long enough to live up to his potential.
The Hit after the jump...

Colin Campbell is expected to suspend him later this afteroon as a purely preemptive measure. "We can't condone whatever it is he'll probably do," said Campbell.

You could tell the last time he was called up that he was on a VERY short leash with John Stevens. He really does have top end offensive skills, despite being a total whackadoo, but you'd never know it, because he was lugging 4th line duty that last time.
I'd love to see this guy for a few shifts on one of the top two lines, but I don't think Stevens has the onions to try that.
