Downie Punches Cancer Patient, Niitty Sets Saves Mark, Flyers Win 3-2
After scoring his first goal of his career, Steve Downie's encore was throwing an after-the-whistle punch at Toronto's Jason Blake later in the game. You may remember Blake from the October announcement that he has a rare form of leukemia. And thus, another chapter is added to the short but interesting Chronicles of Steve Downie. UPDATE: Here's the video.
Toronto scored on the power play, their 48th of the game. The Flyers ended up winning, 3-2, on goals by three Ontario natives (Downie, Carter, Richards). Antero Niittymaki set a club record for saves in a non-OT game (54; h/t: Clare), and the Flyers let up a club record in shots (56), which had stood since 1977. It wasn't all their fault though; the refs did their best to keep the Leafs on the power-play all night.
Congrats to Niitty!

he deserved it. first he comments that downie should be banned from the league, then he gives a face wash from behind. he should have dented the other eye as well.
fuck you jason blake.

This must be what it would've felt like to have Matthew Barnaby on your team. Part of me is glad to have the jackass around, part of me is decidedly not. Where have you gone, Todd Fedoruk? A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.
Oh, that's right, Minnesota.

Todd Fedourek is an embarrassment to this franchise. Your goon.... your fighter... who is afraid to get hit in the face, so he basically gets in grab matches.... gets knocked out by the hated Rangers. Do you remember that? seeing fedourek crumbling to the ice after a punch. Its right up there with Lindros getting lampooned by STevens or Kasparitis or Umberger eating it from Campbell in the playoffs.
If you watch the videos in the previous posts and then the clip of Downie, he is the exact embodiment of the "bullies." Your comparison of Downie to Barnaby is also way off. You'll never, ever see Downie turtle or feign injury. Whether it be pride or just the fact that he's insane.... he's no Barnaby.

Downie could be the best thing to happen to this franchise in a long, long time. Or, he could be a complete nutjob and end up with these outrageous suspensions. At least he plays like he give a damn. I wish more athletes would.

As long as Blake is willing to "lace 'em up", he's willing to receive whatever comes his way, don't hand me this cancer sympathy bullshit! If he's looking for "sympathy" tell him to look in the dictionary between "shit" and "syphillis" and that's where he'll find his "sympathy" not on an N.H.L. rink!

Sometimes I visit hospitals just to punch cancer patients in the face. It's a good stress reliever.

Apparently, Downie will not be suspended:
