Breaking: Mets Land Santana, Pending Extension
USA Today is reporting that the Twins have traded ace Johan Santana to the Mets in exchange for four prospects. I guess we knew this was coming, as the Yankees and Red Sox cooled considerably in their interest in trading for Santana, but it's still a little jaw-dropping. Johan Santana. Is going to be a Met.
In exchange, the Muts gave up outfielder Carlos Gomez and pitchers Phil Humber, Deolis Guerra, and Kevin Mulvey. The only thing that could have made us feel a little better were if they lost the likes of Jose Reyes in the deal, but we're just not that lucky. The report states that once an extension is reached and Johan gets a once-over from the docs, the deal is as good as done.
The deal is pending the Mets and Santana reaching agreement on a six- or seven-year contract extension and that Santana passes a physical; they have been granted a 48 to-72-hour window to do so. Santana has a no-trade clause that he will waive if agreement is reached on a contract extension.
So get ready for six or seven years against the perfect solution to the Phillies dangerous lineup. But hey—Pedro Feliz, right?

Too bad we can't get Cory Lidle to charter Johan's flight to NY.

Dammit. Pedro Feliz, indeed.
The Yankees or Red Sox couldn't match THAT offer? Really? Deolis Guerra got this deal done? Really? Those 4 guys trumped whatever the Yankees and Red Sox put up?
Is there anyone out there who tracks this stuff? Are these guys the Mets gave up any good?

Big deal, so instead of sweeping the Mets the Phillies win two out of three. I'm not losing any sleep over this yet.

Peter Gammons said that Gomez will be a decent player. And he said the guy in Low A ball(not sure which one that is) is a good prospect. All in all, he said that not one of these guys would be in the top 10 prospects of the Yanks or BoSox...So yea, Hank Steinbrenner is a punk and the Sox figured if the Yanks don't take him, they don't need to either... Philly luck, huh, best pitcher in baseball goes on trade market, Yanks could DEF use him, and of course its the first year that the most aggresive man in sports isn't running the show and of course the Muts get him...but hey, we might be getting Stallworth back!!!!!

Whether they get Santana or not, I remain confident that the Mets will find a way to fuck this up.

Hey it's a Mets fan, everybody point and laugh.
To me, this deal is frantic response to the absolute fear our batting lineup has struck into divisional opponents.

I am going out on a limb here and say sanatana has a down year. with that said I am pretty sure the twins are idiots and are once again trying to be like the expos and get out of town.
Posted by: themajor | Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 05:43 PM
themajor, the Twins are building a new ballpark. Before trading Santana, they offered him a reasonable contract. He wanted a longer contract which Minnesota wisely declined to offer.
Last I checked, the Twins have been more successful than us in the past decade, so it's difficult to question their decision to part with Santana rather than give him a contract that could potentially last longer than his prime.

Santana? The spanish guy that plays the guitar?
All JRoll has to do is predict that two months in he will need Tommy John surgery and be out for a year and never come back the same.
Speak up JRoll!

The worst part is that we had the prospects and players to pull off the trade here. Just not the money for the contract. Which is pathetic.

all of the mets fans i know are already rubbing my face in this shit and he has yet to throw a pitch...i bet you they will come up with a shitty fan club name(which WE started) like Santana's Bandanas, or Santana's Bananas...OY
Posted by: sean | Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 06:09 PM
And the Phillies, content to say, "we don't need pitching" watch as the division rival Mets land Santana. The "we don't need pitching" line is pathetic. They haven't won anything without it, but it's ok, they don't need it, I hate the Phillies right now.

Kulp, I did know that, so mistake on my part. though if my memory serves me correct weren't the twins about to be taken over by mlb and moved a few years back? and success doesn't always equal fans in seats. that being said I was wrong
Posted by: themajor | Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 06:29 PM
Phillies fans...
We did not have the prospects to pull this trade off. Gomez and Humber are MLB Ready. Mulvey is near-ready and Guerra is only 18 so he is at least a few years away.
The reason the Twins accepted the Mets offer was because it was really between the Bosox and Mets. The Yankees did not make a final offer. The twins felt it was more valuable to send Santana to the NL. Also, the Mets have more money to give fulfill his monetary needs than do the Red Sox at this moment. Though Boston and NY previously offered better "rumored" packages, money was always the issue.
With that said, If we win the season series and handle the rest of our opponents, we should be able to win the division.
Santana also has a lot of question marks from the Sabermetric type baseball guys. For example, he threw a lot less sliders last year and his velocity dipped.
The Phillies have always said they needed pitching, but they have different avenues than the Mets have to acquire pitching.

I would really like it if the Phillies' front office at least PRETENDED like they were making an effort to improve the team...

Sorry folks; "Chameleon" Davis is my functionally retarded stepbrother. Please take his pro-Mets ranting with a grain of pity, and try not to stare at the drool running down his chin.
enjoy your '07 championship we choked over to you
We did very much, thank you, and we look forward to more choke-jobs from the Mets, with or without Santana.

Santana has to go out and win. We can bitch all we want, but all it takes is a torn ACL or blown shoulder. I'll worry about how good he is when the regular season is over.
Posted by: Phils Phan | Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 10:45 PM
Santana is nice... but I still see 4 question marks in the Mets rotation. By my count, that's the same amount of question marks I see for the Phils.
Posted by: Gaze | Tuesday, January 29, 2008 at 10:58 PM
Hey chief000... like Austin Powers said... I'd like a solid gold toilet, but I don't see that in the cards!
The 2008 Phillies are FU**ed with big, orange and blue capital letters. You'd need a lineup of right-handed all stars to get through it.

I am not worried about this what so ever. We have a killer offense with three guys that in any year have a legit shot at MVP calliber seasons. The Mets got one pitcher whose velocity has dipped and lost a pitch. No we wont be handed the title again were gonna have to earn it like we have before. AND it will be that much sweeter when we do. The Mets get the names every year and you know what those names have a way of not reaching their caliber. look at their pitching rotation those guys were a sweet lineup 3-4 years ago. This is gonna be the summer of 2008. Santana is gonna have to sweat when he sees our line up and check twice to see if hes in the AL for the first five batters then he'll see he's in the NL try and get comfortable and have hell to deal with again. I'd rather see the best competiton more times that way we will be ready for the best later. No one can say our division is weak.

If the Orioles accept the Rosario-Youman-Bohn package for Bedard, the Phillies will be right back in the divisional race.
Santana might make NY the favorites to win the division, but anything can happen when they face the Phillies in the NLCS.
Posted by: Mike | Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 07:05 AM
While this sucks, I don't think it in any way turns the division over to the Mets. Imo, the phils have a better lineup *and* better all-around pitching. Hamels is sick. Kendrick was really impressive last year. Myers is good - if flaky - and has the potential to be an ace. Moyer can still pitch, and probably will continue to be able to do so as long as people can't catch up to his 50 mph fastball. Eaton blows, but that's life. If you can throw Bedard in there we have the best overall rotation in the NL, and among the best in baseball. Lidge has the ability to be as good of a closer as Wagner is by now, so long as he doesn't go mental. We have the last 2 NL MVP's, and Chase who was as good as MVP last year before he got hurt. Feliz is a minor upgrade, we shouldn't lose too much in the outfield with the platoon. We have a lot going for us - including, for the first time since 1993, some momentum.
I'm not scared. I'm excited.

I think everyone forgets how nasty cole hamels was last year i havent seen someone make so many good hitters look like fools in years, and personally i cant wait to see cole and santana go at it they may very well have the two best change ups in the league (makes the rivalry that much better) and mets will still find a way to choke phils take the division and santana means nothing (just like the whole beltran deal).

post from another phillies blog:
The sounds of our “small splashes” never sounded so small. This is a tidalwave, causing a flood that will submerge the rest of the National League East for six or seven years. Baseball’s best pitcher belongs to the Mets, set to anchor the rotation for years to come while canceling out our best hitters head-to-head…Introducing the winner, and new champion, of the 2008 off-season, and possibly much, more more: Johan Santana and the New York Mets, who’ve stuck it right up the Phillies’ butts.”
thats right bitches!!!! THATS RIGHT!!!!

beltran led the mets to game 7 of the NLCS in '06.....how many playoff wins did the phils have last year??
yeah...thats what i thought....
win 1 playoff game...just 1...and then talk shit..but until then....just learn how to use punctuation marks......nice run-on sentence you moron

Santana led the American League last year in home home runs allowed... see you at CBP.

Does anyone know where these rumors about Bedard are coming from?
Posted by: Michael C | Wednesday, January 30, 2008 at 02:32 PM
keep coming up with lame reasons to think santana still isnt the best pitcher in baseball........and now he's pitching to pitchers every 9th hitter instead of dh's......
must suck to have a GM that signs the likes of david bell, wes helms and pedro feliz......your best offseason move was getting a "closer" who hasnt been good in 3 yrs......good luck with that
hahahahahhahahahahha
