Shocker: The Sixers Have Bad Attendance
Dominating over any team is not something you'd usually associate with the Sixers, but apparently they've done quite well against the Hawks as of late. The Sixers have won 8 out of 10 against Atlanta and look to continue that streak this evening at the Wachovia Center. Problem is: nobody will be there to see it happen.
The attendance at Sixers games this season is horrid. This was to be expected with the post-Iverson era Sixers. A post over at FanHouse last week pointed out that whoever tallies the reported attendance numbers appears to be cooking the books. This may be happening all over the league.
Steve Luhm of the Salt Lake Tribune noted a similar over-estimation in Philadelphia earlier this week, estimating that only 6,000 fans turned out for an announced crowd of 11,006. The picture above was taken from that game -- the upper deck is hard to make out, but you can plainly see large sections of red seats in the lower bowl. Luhm writes, "On TV, it looked like the old days of the ABA, when entire sections of the arena would be empty and fans sitting 30 rows from the floor could hear the players, coaches and referees talking to each other."
This could make for incredible entertainment. If the game sucks, maybe some of you should head down to the Wach with your pocket cameras and video tape yourselves heckling the team. "Yo Mo! Put in ThadYo!"
Kudos to Matt Watson for the witty headline, "Where half-empty arenas happen".

The biggest problem is that Sixers management still wants fans to shell out an unholy amount of money to see one of the worst teams in the league. You want to sit in the lower bowl? Expect to pay at least $52 a pop (before any transaction fees, of course). Christ, even the good mezzanine seats are $45. You're better off buying the cheapest ticket possible and sneaking down onto the lower levels.
