McNabb Is From Chicago, So Trade Him To The Bears, Right?
Deadspin pointed us yesterday to a new "blog" by Jay Mariotti. A lot of people don't like the guy, apparently. Me? Indifference due to never having read anything he's written. That or I just don't remember it.
So anyway, JMar has a blog and on it writes that the Rexsuffering Bears could be interested in McNabb. I quote:
As for trying to locate the first franchise quarterback in the history of the NFL’s charter franchise, options aren’t plentiful. But one emerging possibility is Donovan McNabb, pride of south suburban Dolton, who could benefit from fresh scenery in his hometown as his honeymoon ends in Philadelphia. Once they start booing in Silly Philly, it’s time for a new address, especially with McNabb looking slow and tentative after offseason knee surgery. When the Eagles drafted Kevin Kolb, the message to McNabb was clear: Win now or we’re phasing you out. He has responded with two losses and is 9-12 as a starter since the Eagles lost Super Bowl XXXIX. The club can void his farcical 12-year, $115 million deal, signed in 2002, at any time. Or trade him.
Right. So what you're really saying is that McNabb should have started looking for a new address on draft day.
PFT also hints at McNabb to Chicago, saying, "McNabb's days in Philly are numbered. We used to think he'd be gone after the 2007 season; we now think there's an outside chance that he gets traded within the next month."
My take: not happening, people.
And while we're on the subject of five, I thought Dana Pennett O'Neil had a particularly nice column -- for a chic! (I kid, I kid) -- in the Daily News. It's good, seriously. Check it. She has a unique take on the subject that I enjoyed.
Earlier today, Matt took an in depth look at the situation as well. Hopefully this will be the last post about race and we can focus on football from now on.

sad, but true.
no way he gets moved this year, but if we don't go far in the playoffs or miss them entirely, you have to imagine the writing is on the wall.
all the mcnabb haters will have a summer to tell everyone "i told you so," and once again the only people who get hurt by this are the fans.

"Silly Philly?" NEXT!
As for PFT, he had it right with Vick, so he deserves some wrong guesses, but this one doesn't seem like it's going to pan out. You dump McNabb so you can make sure your project quarterback gets instilled with bad habits and loaded with unwieldy expectations? McNabb may have played his first year, but was also more of a proven commodity than Kolb. Florio is dreaming.
Whether he's back next year is a separate question, but there's no way he gets traded mid-season, especially not to a conference rival, and double-especially not to one they play *this season*.

A trade at this point would be impossible.
First of all, anyone can see there is a really good chance McNabb gets cut at the end of the year, so why would any team be foolish enough to trade picks and pick up the huge back-end of his contract?
Second, even though he represents a huge upgrade over Rex Grossman, would he really be able to play in a new system this season? He doesn't even appear to be able to play in ours right now. Mid-season trades of starting quarterbacks are not something you're going to be seeing any of.
It wouldn't be a surprise to see #5 head home next season, but Minnesota is going to be an option too if Brad Childress is still the head coach there.

I don't see why the Eagles would EVER trade McNabb to Chicago ... one of the few teams in the NFC who are "right there" as far as Superbowl contention. Everybody pretty much agrees that the only thing holding the Bears back from being a dominating team is a decent QB - so it would be pretty stupid for the Eagles to just hand their competition the missing piece to the puzzle.
It would be as stupid as giving your first round pick to a divisional rival or something ....
