Ed Wade Packs His Parachute for Houston
Someone tell the guys over at fireedwade.com to get the site up and running again! Ed Wade has been hired as the next GM of the Houston Astros, marking team president Tal Smith's worst decision since putting the hill in centerfield. Last seen swinging from a tree in South Jersey, Wade takes over the puppet strings a pretty dismal club, but at least the expectations don't appear as high as he's used to in Philly, where in 8 seasons, his teams never once made the playoffs, and we're still dealing with some of his bloated contracts.
>>Ex-Phillies GM Is Houston's New GM Pick [Jayson Stark]

Holy Shit! Gillick, get on the phone to Houston immediately, I bet we can get Pence and Oswalt for Burrell.

Excellent.. we can trade anyone in our bullpen to Wade. Please take Gordon, Alfonseca, and Mesa off our hands.

Jayson Stark gives Wade some love in the article he wrote on ESPN.com about it:
After being elevated to the GM job, Wade prioritized the rebuilding of the Phillies' depleted farm system. And virtually the entire nucleus of the Phillies' current team was signed and developed during his tenure.

And by "love" I mean he kisses his ass.

Duh, I just re-linked to the same article you put in the post. Moron. Maybe I can be a MLB GM too.

I guess we don't have to worry about a good Houston team for a few years now.

yes, ed wade sucked and i was glad to see him go, but we DID grow ryan howard, cole hamels, chase utley, shane victorino (i remember when people laughed when we picked him), and others while he was GM.
but ed wade still sucks!

From what I understand, Assistant GM Mike Arbuckle is much more responsible for the selection and development of all those players than Wade, so unless the Astros have a good scouting... oh, who am I kidding, with Ed there it doesn't matter what they have.

Stark gives Wade some love in another article too.
"Wade and Amaro might have had their critics in Philadelphia. But it's hard not to notice that every one of the Phillies' 10 current best players -- with the exception of Aaron Rowand -- was acquired during their administration."
Can't really argue with that.

Unfortunately, if Wade's like everyone else who left, the Astros will be hoisting a trophy within the next two or three years.
Of course, the others weren't GM's, but Schilling's won two World Series, Rolen's been to two WS and won last year, Abreu went to the playoffs with the Yankees and Francona even won a damned ring with the Red Sox. (And of course let's not forget Eisenreich and Daulton in 1997.)
I guess there's something about leaving the Phillies that helps to shake the stink off you.

He might have a reasonable budget in Houston...that can make a difference.

I was hoping, for our sake, he would be GM in the NL East. Oh well.

What the hell, Frank? The Phils have had a huge budget since Citizens Bank Park. Wade blew millions on Mike Lieberthal and Pat Burrell's huge-ass contracts. Big budgets just mean bigger albatrosses with Ed Wade.

Ed Wade's expertise can benefit a team the most in the position of opposing team's GM.
