Temple Sports Put on Single Public Probation
The NCAA has placed Temple on probation after the University discovered and self-reported that its tennis coach was allowing an ineligible player to take the court. Yes that's right, the entire sports program, including the bread-winning men's basketball team and blossoming women's hoops squad, is on probation because of the tennis team. Congratulations former coach Bill Hoehne, you're a complete @#*$%.
The coach, who was fired on April 12, 2005, hid the scheme by mumbling the name of the student-athlete during pre-match introductions and by asking opponents to skip formal introductions altogether, the NCAA said.
The school and Hoehne were cited for violations including fraud and erroneous student-athlete eligibility certifications.
The men's tennis team received a one-year ban from the postseason and must forfeit all matches in which an ineligible student-athlete played during the 2004-05 academic year, the NCAA's Division I committee on infractions said. The Owls were 3-9 that season.
So after coming up with the foolproof plan of masking the identity of the ineligible player by mumbling, Coach Hoehne still finished the season with an abysmal record. Everyone knows if you cheat, you'd better win.

This is some kind of joke right? Mumbling the players names? Skipping introductions? Probation?
Who knew Temple had a tennis team? Did they beat the football team in scrimmages?

Jr: No one likes a smartass, son.
Bryan: Yes, they have a football team. They made headlines last year when they lost nine scholarships due to academics. Previously they were in the news when they were dropped from the Big East. Other than that, they've not been heard from.

Temple has a football team. Apparently in November, Penn State wanted to forego scrimmaging the first team v. the second team, and instead, rest the second team and scrimmage Temple. Kudos to JoePa for playing Temple so late that, even if they're in the hunt for anything worth chasing, every commentator and ranking will not cease yapping and about strength of schedule. Seeing the carnage from the Beaver Stadium bleachers last year, I could only feel extreme pity for Temple. They belong in Div I-AA with Penn, 'nova, Rhode Island, etc. Fight on, State, Fight on.
