Hunter Pence Soaks It In

CITIZENS BANK PARK -- Saturday night's celebration was relatively tame in comparison to many we've seen from this club in years past. The combo of having won the division five-straight seasons and knowing the real prize is more than a month away can keep things in perspective a bit.

Oh, but there were champagne bottles popped and the man who seemed to savor the moment the most was Hunter Pence. (Although Michael Martinez certainly rivaled him. Martinez was the lead champagne assassin.)

But Pence stood out. And not just because he's so damn tall. When he came out from the clubhouse with the rest of a team, he led the crowd in a "Let's Go Eat!" chant.

"It's a lot of fun. To me, it's a phrase that says 'let's celebrate this together.' First you gotta win, then let's go celebrate."

Other players were much, much tamer. I believe Shane Victorino actually went to lift weights.

Pence, however, seemed like he took more champagne than anyone on the team. Except for maybe Wheels. Reports from those at home had Muffin taking blast after blast. I heard him say afterwards that he had champagne in places he didn't want to admit.

Hunter was literally dripping wet as he wandered on the field during the celebration, stopping to light a cigar with bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer.

"I'm soaked right now and I'm freezing," Pence said as he shivered on the field with a smile.

He had not yet eaten.
